Here’s a guess: Some fans believe there’s an obsession about LE that goes beyond his accomplishments at ISU, empathy for his struggles and happiness about his perseverance.
That doesn’t necessarily summarize my opinion, but I can relate to at least part of it.
I want him to do well (I have no reason to hope he doesn’t do well). When I saw that LE got the CSU job, I was curious to read about it. It’s the same reason that led me to open this thread. If LE wins a conference title at Colorado State, or has a good run in the tournament, I’ll probably say, “That’s cool. Good for him. This guy can coach.”
Am I going to become a CSU fan because LE is coaching there? Not a chance.
But I have no problem with anyone who would.

I understand what you are saying here, and I can kind of agree.
The problem is that people ONLY talk about that.
It's kind of like the cult of personality mac the mediocre is with a large segment of the fanbase. In order to be as good of a fan as they are, you have to disregard all of the bad years, and most of the bad losses in the "good" years, and well basically focus on about 10 games over the time that he was here.
It isn't that bad with LE, but ignore the first year, and of course years FOUR and FIVE when the program should have been ready to explode.
He had a retention rate that was chewyesque, and he lost very good players in Power, and Haluska.
He also treated people badly, in public, and his disdain and treatment of BVD, his boss, was so bad that there was ZERO goodwill left for him from the people that could have saved him. All the vitriol aimed at BVD is well deserved. But he was hired to do exactly what he did. And had LE not been a *****, there was a chance that he could have been saved. I mean, if you think that BVD made that decision all by himself, then I have a bridge to sell you...GG wanted his *** gone, had he not, they would have done whatever rehab they needed to do to save him.
And remember, we fell off the cliff after Tinsley left, I mean 12 wins bad. He had a ridiculous schedule the next year, and won 17 games, but what was the conference record?

Re: Eustachy confirmed as Colorado State coach
BVD. epic fail what an idiot the way he handled that... his career is doing well? not.... set us back 7 years after being on top of the bball world. Man did he make a huge mistake firing LE. Glad LE climbing back to the top.

I'm no Eustachy apologist, but that is quite a bit of hyperbole. Concentrate on 10 wins when in a two year span the team won 57 games? And how many overtimes were there in the conference losses (all on the road) during that time frame? Yes, Eustachy had a lot of warts. I know people working at Hilton during that time; I know how badly he treated people. I know a lot of alcoholics that treat people badly. I didn't think so at the time, but yes he needed to go when he was sent packing. But seriously, 57 wins in back to back years had never been done before or since at ISU. I don't think you can overlook the bad, but I think it ridiculous to suggest that the only thing people can look back at is 10 wins.
You demonstrate that many of the Eustachy haters are just as bad as the worst of the Eustachy lovers. Get real.

mikem, LE lost Power & Haluska? Let's see, how hard would LE try to keep someone that was screwing his wife at the time? Hmmm. Haluska transferred after LE was let go (most likely because LE was let go), and the ensuing debacle of a coaching search led by your hero BVD. LE and the Haluskas were good friends.

Wow...
Your kidding, right? Where did I say that BVD was my "hero?" Nice diversion there in order to admit something that you don't want to, btw, well played...
But, BVD was hired to do exactly what he did. And if you don't think that President Geoffrey didn't want things done the way they ended up, you are crazy...
LE was a ****. He treated people like ****. There are legendary stories of how he "interacted" with fans at Cyclone Club gatherings. Talk to people that worked in Hilton when he was the coach, and see what they think of the guy.
GG was over him too, had he not been, then LE would have remained the coach.
I get the cult of personality thing, it makes sense for fans that think the way that Iowa State fans traditionally think. You should always appreciate the conference titles, they are so rare for a school like this. So I get why people are so scared to say anything bad about the guy.

Re: Eustachy confirmed as Colorado State coach
You were completely wrong about Power and Haluska, now who is diverting?
BVD was a farce and did more harm to Iowa State than LE by the way he handled the "scandal". He did more to perpetuate it than anything else. Later, holding a press conference only to announce it was discovered that LE once bet a player $10 about making a FT. WTF? Other coaches black-balled BVD and were lining up to interview for the MBB job, just to turn it down. Talk about embarrassing the school.
GG wanted BVD gone at the same time as LE, but was concerned about appearances of not supporting his staff (since GG had not been in the job long). GG made sure BVD was gone at a more politically correct time, after making him a paid "consultant" (stripping his actual authority) for most of his last year.
You really like the phrase "Cult of personality". Keep using it, maybe it will catch on outside your own head.
