Ellerman is a a good example of a practice squad player that probably doesn't have a chance at getting a scholarship. But if you bring in players from all the way across the country you have to have some intention of giving them a chance to earn a scholarship and not just being a practice dummy.

So his offer came while on the visit but Morgan got his later that night? Recruiting is intriguing.

It could have been something as simple as with one his lead recruiter and head coach didn't have time to connect before he left town while with the other they did have a chance.

He is going to sign the best PG he can in almost every class, and walkons especially will have no bearing on that.

I'm just stating that there would be 4 players on the team that are upperclassmen and capable of playing PG, with at least 2 of them being scholarship players.

There's always that chance. But when you recruit an area, you see a lot of kids (from that area). You also know a lot of coaches in that area. You might think "this kid works hard, he seems to be a good kid and teammate, and he's not likely to get a high-major offer. I've talked to him, and he likes our school, (for whatever reason). He knows a guy on our current team, and he knows some kids in next year's class that I'm recruiting. Both his coaches and I go way back, and I've chatted up his parents at several AAU tourneys. I could offer the kid from Sac City a walk-on spot, but frankly this kid would be a better walk-on. I think I'll offer a preferred spot. If he takes it, great. If not, nothing lost."
It's strategic, in multiple ways.

It's both strategic, in multiple ways. I understand your point but are you really telling me that a kid originally from North Carolina and that played in New Hampshire really wants to come to a Division 1 school in Iowa while paying his own way for 4 years if the coach didn't tell him that he at least a chance of earning a scholarship. Especially considering the fact that he easily could have went to a D2 school or low to mid major on a full ride.

Maybe he wanted to come to ISU and study Engineering or in another acclaimed ISU program. A lot of walk-ons are students first - they know for a fact that they will be "going pro in something else" as the NCAA commercial goes. ISU gets students from all over the country and even all over the world. Each one has their own reasons for going to ISU.
