I'll also vote for Simmons's book and Shirley's is entertaining too.
I'd also nominate David Halberstam's Breaks of the Game.
Looking forward to reading Jack McCallum's book on the Dream Team.
I'm not sure but I'm pretty sure I read it in 2nd grade and it was by Matt Christopher.

Season on the Brink
Heaven is a Playground by Rick Telander.
Describes NYC playground hoops in the early 70's
"They Call Me Coach" by John Wooden......one of the most down-to-earth, common sense books I have ever read on coaching.
"Loose Balls".....About all the shenanigans in the old ABA.
"My Life" by Magic Johnson.....I just always really liked him as a player and a person, so I read it.
