I don't understand how one of the reasons listed that we will be better is because there are 4 freshman as opposed to 2.
I have no doubts Percy will improve but he just has some growing up to do and he's going to have growing pains. He needs some muscle and footwork upgrades and he'll be fine as a junior and senior. Chances are it won't magically happen over a year. He was a very poor defender last year, if he can become an average defender this year that would be great. He's not going to be great this year.
Ejim is an undersized guy trying to play 4 when he fits as neither the 3 or 4. Unless he becomes the new Cato he's never going to be a lockdown defender inside and not able to hold up the back end of the press.
This is a pretty ridiculously optimistic outlook. Also, what is a true SF exactly?
its been a long time since we've had so many good returning players with experience: ejim, babb, mcgee, booker, bubu, gibson.
its been a long time (ever?) since we've had 5 seniors, 4 of whom are 5th year: clyburn, lucious, babb, booker.
its been a long time since we've had a talented group of freshman recruits.
a lot of positives to build on, but let's not minimize what great player royce was, our career best 3 point shooter in scotty, and a guy like chris allen who made a lot of big plays for us.
much tougher schedule this year too.
I'm really anxious for this season. I believe we have the right group of players to replace what we lost last season. The only thing that we can't replace is the huge mismatch that Royce created. But I have a huge amount of faith in Hoiball's offense, and can't wait to see what we do with this traditional lineup.
As somebody else said, we could be better this year and still finish lower than we did in the Big12 last year. This is what has me super excited for the season to start. Every game in the league (our games or not) will be entertaining to watch (besides maybe tech and tcu). I look for us to try and push the top 4. With how good the conference is going to be, I'd be more than happy with that finish and would assume a top 4 big12 finish would mean at least a 7 seed in the dance.
I love Hoiball.
I think this will be a faster team than last year's. I think this will be an even better shooting team overall than last year's. It may not be as good at shooting from behind the arc, but then again it may be. All depends on the new guys.
I think this will be nearly as good of a scoring team as last year, and I think it could be a much better defensive team.
The only real concerns I have about it is the interior defense and the rebounding. I think that will all depend on how much Melvin, Booker, and Gibson develop and how strong Clyburn and Niang are inside. If this team can get defensive rebounds and force turnovers, I think it will be an even better fast break team than last year's.
I think you're compartmentalizing the positions too much. There really isn't a difference between a "SG" and a "SF". At least not in ISU's offense.
