Gilstrap and Clark were for a different coach which placed more emphasis on size at that position. And I would say Babb passes as a SF. But really, in the offense Hoiberg has run thus far, he's all about getting the best players out there at once. Therefore, the 2 and 3 and 4 and 5 are largely interchangeable.
Royce may have created alot of mismatches, but he also created lots of turnovers for our offense. Sometimes our offense looked pretty stagnant.....an experienced pg should do wonders for our offense.
To the guy who said we can replace royces passing, you are very incorrect. He is currently one of the best passers in the game of basketball . He had the best assist per possession ratio of any big-man in draft combine history.
I would be pleased with the same record.
Royce was a true X factor, and I don't think the two teams can be accurately compared. The loss of a couple sharpshooters hurts too. But overall, I think we have every reason to hope for a great season again this year.
I still think you are too hung up on the 1-2-3-4-5 positions. By your definition, you are saying a SF has to be the most athletic guy on the court. To your original point, this year's team will have more depth and more of a traditional look to it. But, that in itself is not going to make them better than this past season's team. Remember, it took us a while to get going.
We can very easily replace Royce's passing. Will the passes be ESPN top 10 passes? No. You are making it sound like Royce averaged 10 assists a game. He averaged 5 a game. Lucious will have the ball in his hands more than Royce did. Also Lucious averaged 4 assists a game in 25 minutes per game at Michigan State. It's not like anyone said the assists are going to be taken over by another big man. It will not be hard to replace his passing.
I would say the SF is usually the most athletic person on a team yes. More depth and more balance usually means better in most scenarios. The reason it took us a while to get going last year is because we had Scott, Ejim, and Bubu as the only ones that have ever played together. We also had to figure out who was going to be the point guard. We first tried Chris Allen that didn't work. Then Scott, that didn't work. Then Royce did work that's why it took a while. Also 6 of our top 9 players had never played a minute of college basketball together.
This year we have a PG. There will be no trying to figure out who our PG is. Also 6 of our top 9 guys have all already played together(Babb, Booker, Tyrus, Ejim, Bubu, Percy) We no longer have 4 shooting guards and 1 point guard and no small forward. We have 2 point guards and 2 shooting guards and a small forward. We have balance and depth and a true proven PG from Michigan State and 6 guys that have already played together, o yeah also 5 seniors. We will be better.
Im asking cause i dont know, who would u rather have? DG or lucious?
I don't think people understand how absolutely dead on correct you are with this comment. The kid was sucking wind all year long by hustling and shutting down the best player on the team. Babb is a product to succeed with depth. If you can give this kid some minutes to recoup, his shots will go down.
I still wish we had one more big coming in for this year's team. Not that I think the guys ISU has can't do it, but just for a little insurance in case of injuries, suspensions, whatever.
