Wasn't he also lead recruiter on some transfer guy named White?

EDIT: You beat me to it, broken.

What incentive does he have to stay? Otz makes a ton more money and is very well compensated for his position. Mann is the new man on campus and higher on the chain of command (as shown in his paycheck). He's just above the player development director and below the assistant head, other assistant, and the director of ops.

Like most other fields, the easiest way to move up in coaching is to move on.

Mann has more experience to his name and does probably just as much recruiting, but just in a different area. It is obvious that Otz holds down the Wisconsin recruits, Matt the Minneapolis and Northeast U.S. recruits, and Mann the Michigan recruits. Matt and Mann seem more like an equal level tandem recruiting team to me than Matt as the lead recruiter. If anything, Mann may have some more superiority just due to his longer experience. While Matt is a stud, he is still very young and very new to the game.
All coaches do recruiting, including Fred. But when winter rolls around, I suspect that Mann will be in Ames more doing more actual prep work and coaching of the team than Matt. Even during the basketball season, Matt will still spend a majority of his time on the road recruiting. That's why I consider him the "recruiter" assistant coach.

If he doesn't want to coach in the tournament then UCONN is the place to go, the only place in the nation I can guarantee won't be in the dance next year.

“One day we’ll be in here celebrating a Big 12 championship,” Rhoads said. “That I can promise you.”

I would imagine being an assistant at UConn would help him get his name out there better than being an assistant at Iowa State.
His name is obviously already "out there" if he's being mentioned as possible assistant at UConn.

let's be honest about that, that was an odd situation where we got very fortunate (or lucky) in landing Royce.

Like I said, Matt could be a monster recruiter like some have said, but he hasn't shown it the last couple years. But, he is also only 27, so it's to be expected that Mann, Otz, and Hoiberg are the ones getting the talent.

It's the nature of the beast that assistants move one. He's going to leave sooner or later. Fred will just need to reload when it occurs. The man we want to hold onto is Mr. Hoiberg!

    Easiest to replace:

    Otzelberger
    Mann
    Abdelmassih

Abdelmassih is the easy choice here. He landed Royce. Other than that he's proven? I doubt we'd see much change if he moved on.

    Re: Abdelmassih to UConn?

It would suck since he's the lead recruiter for Vaughn but I'm sure Fred has a good enough relationship with him that if MA did leave, it wouldn't hurt us too bad.

I may be wrong as I actually can't remember, but wasn't Matt behind Niang? That is his wheelhouse up there. I know Fred was heavily involved there too but wasn't Matt in the mix to some extent? If so, Niang is a good badge for Matt.

Hell, I would go a step further and bet that Fred ASSUMED Matt would be gone after a couple years. If you've got young, hungry assistants, you've got to assume they'll be in line for better opportunities eventually and want to take advantage of them.

These guys are ladder climbers and who can blame them. If the UConn job is a "promotion" in terms of title and responsibility, I imagine Matt will move on and I will wish him well.
