Couple memories of Julo:
1. I remember him beating OU/Billy Tubbs by rebounding his own missed free throw and putting it in. Tubbs said after the game that the "30 year old freshman" was pretty good. He did have a receding hair line even at 18/19.
2. Floyd got hired and Julo said at a Cyclone Club outing, "We don't like to play defense, we like to run and gone and shoot the ball." This is after Floyd had spoken and talked about his value the ball/defense first philosophy.
3. Floyd said after a game that he put .8 (or something like that) on the dry erase board in the locker room and asked the team if they knew what that was. No one knew. Answer: Julo's rebounds per game. Julo had like 12 or 14 boards that night.
Also quite the character. Would see him riding around campus on this rickety old bike that looked two sizes too small....always an amusing site.
That horrible bike he had also usually had flat tires. So picture him in his almost 7' gangly body riding an undersized old bike with flat tires. It would make a kind of screaching noise too. I crossed paths with him regularly on my way too class, always brightened up the long walk on those freezing cold days.
"You have great authority in your quotes, if you ascribe them to someone else."
I often see Julo at various ISU sporting events. He is a great example of how college sports have benefits beyond the actual playing of games. He would have never come to Iowa if it wasn't for B-ball. He used his free education, stuck around, and is now a fully contributing resident of Iowa. Plus I suspect he is a good alumni too!
Does anybody else remember the picture the register ran after Kansas came to town and they took a photo from up in Hilton's rafters looking down at the basket and captured Julo, Loren Meyer and Raef Lafrentz going for a rebound. Man that was a cool photo does anybody have a copy of it.
