Looking for a Cyclone Basketball Primer
I'm a UNI alum and long time Panther fan who accepted a job at Iowa State and moved to the Ames area a couple months ago. While I will always be a UNI fan first, I am trying to become a legitimate Cyclone supporter as well.
I know almost nothing about the ISU basketball team: The 'Clones had a future lottery pick and made it to the tournament last year (even though you lost to UNI early in the season). I understand that Coach Hoiberg is an ISU legend. That's the sum total of my knowledge.
I'm hoping that some of you can fill me in on the team. What do you expect each player's role to be? What style game do they play? Coaching tendencies, etc.
Thanks in advance. Go Panth....um, I mean Cyclones!

Re: Looking for a Cyclone Basketball Primer
Welcome, always good to have another basketball fan.
I'm in college so I don't know the specifics of the "good ol' days".
Jonny Orr was our head coach a long time ago (1980-1994). He ran a fast paced offense, with little defense. That's our true history for the pace we love to see. He was an amazing character and really got Hilton/probably State gym jumping. He had some good success and started an amazing run of basketball. Really got the most out of his players.
Then Tim Floyd was our head coach (1994-1998) He really brought in a talented group. and led us to 2 NCAA appearances before taking the Chicago Bulls Head coaching job. This is the start of what we thought would be a dynasty.
Then Larry Eustachy was our coach from 98-03. He led us to the elight 8 his second year, and arguably should have won the NC, and then the nxt year we... ... ... lost in the first round... ... ... to Hampton. The nxt year we sucked, but still was wild.
Then he got fired for drinking w/ mizzou chicks and some on going issues. If you don't know about this, dont ask here becuz it will get people arguing like mad.
Then Wayne Morgan was HC. He recruited for Eustachy, brought in talent, but was a horrible coach. Still his teams were fun to watch w/ Stinson and Blaylock. He was eventually fired and, as you know, McDermott took over. He sucked and we lucked out when Creighton called him out.
Now Hoiberg is here and we are very excited for the future. He is bringing in some pretty good talent and has shown that he can coach as well. Hilton Magic is starting to stir for the first real time since early Morgan/Eustachy era.
Our team this year should be a better TEAM, last year we got kinda 1-diminsonal on offense, luckily we had the best and most versitile player in College last year in Royce White. Our defense was pretty horrible, out side of Chris Babb and Mcgee. We have a true point guard in Mich. St transfer Kori Lucious and were really excited to see Will Clyborne on the floor.

Ps sorry for all the misspellings, grammar, and disorganized thoughts. I just got done writing a 10 page paper I started lastnight.

Re: Looking for a Cyclone Basketball Primer
Welcome aboard... Please don't ruin us like previous UNI Grad mentioned in above post. Other then that. Fred is Dreamy... Buy the shirt from WRNL and spend hours looking at it. That should help you catch up on things.
Re: Looking for a Cyclone Basketball Primer
UNI sucks. When you come to realize that, only then can you call yourself a cyclone supporter.
Re: Looking for a Cyclone Basketball Primer
I'm expecting a lot of defense from the team this year. Babb and McGee are lock down defenders and we're expecting just as much from Clyburn. Rest of the team should be better as a whole. Royce, Scotty, and CA were some of the worst defenders I've seen at ISU in a while. So in this aspect, losing them helps the team.
As for offense, I don't really know what to expect. Royce, Scotty, and CA did most of the scoring last year. I believe they were also are three top players in assists. With that being said, Clyburn is expected to come in and be the leading scorer. Lucious is expected to come in and be the assist guy and run the offense. Whether they can both do that is a big question mark still. Babb, McGee, and Ejim were all role players last year who managed to step up from time to time and score in bunches. For the offense to be successful this season they will have to do this much more frequently. I'm expecting for a lot of running in the open court to allow for easy buckets as often as possible.
Another big question mark is how much the freshmen will be able to contribute this season. We have a total of 4 and all 4 could potentially see some real playing time this year.
Lineup is going to look something like this.
C- Percy Gibson / Anthony Booker
PF- Melvin Ejim / Georges Niang (FR)
SF- Will Clyburn / Nkereuwem Okoro (FR)
SG- Chris Babb / Tyrus McGee / Sherron Dorsey-Walker (FR)
PG- Korie Lucious / Naz Long (FR)

Classy. The fact that UNI has beaten the Cyclones 6 of the last 8 times they've played including the last 3 in Hilton doesn't really support your conclusion though. Quit acting like a Hawkeye fan.

Not sure if you are serious, but Chewy refers to the coach, and I use the term coach loosely, who was here before Freddy.
