I totally, totally agree with you - and mental illness deserves understanding and recognition, while being a turd doesn't. Unfortunately, though, not all of the world has caught up to that knowledge. It's great of Royce to be fighting against that ignorance, he just has to be careful how he presents himself and the disease since he's sort of the pioneer.

This is a totally wild, dissimilar metaphor, but it's the only one I can think of at 7:15 a.m., so I'm rolling with it. When AIDS first struck, there was a lot of ignorance on the subject, a lot of bias. Ryan White, a kid with a great attitude and a sad story was the first real face of it, and I think that helped. He was someone to whom the public could be sympathetic. It helps if Royce can be sympathetic, can show that he's fighting against this disease instead of using it for publicity (which is a little how the press release could have been taken).

(I'm not sure if that's a better or worse metaphor than the TO one...)

If this country would just get a high speed rail system put in place already this wouldn't be an issue!!

It still comes down to the same thing, Royce is going to need to produce to make it worth the headache for the Rockets to keep him. If he's a dynamic, change of pace guy off the bench, I'm sure they'll be happy to accomodate him. If he's just another easily replaceable backup 4, he won't last long.

I'm okay with him saying this....just not publicly. Although leaving fuzzy on exactly how he wants them to help him deal with the anxiety is puzzling. Can you include physiciartic(sp?) in his health ins plan?

Wish him the best, but I'll agree with him that he does need help with his disorder in order to make the best of his NBA career.

That's a great point, it all comes down to court production. He'll be shown the door in a year or two if he doesn't produce.

One more thing - if Royce is taking his bus everywhere, he's going to miss all the late night, team building, high stakes Bourre games on the plane. I don't think whatever posse he has with him on his bus are going to be up for $1000 hands of it.

For those who haven't seen his video, he basically says he now has OCD, and his anxiety makes his OCD worse.

He also is extremely appreciative of the Rockets for the help they have provided him and for their understanding and for coming extremely close to meeting him half way. He believes a deal could be done soon.

As for my personal belief, which is the right belief: Royce White said during his announcement that he was leaving ISU for the NBA not just because he wanted to be a professional basketball player, but because he wanted to raise awareness of mental illness and that there are rules in the NCAA that kept him from doing some of the things he wanted to do to raise awareness. I think by making a stand and making the NBA and Rockets take the measures to ensure he is going to be ok with his Anxiety disorder is one of the ways his agent wants to bring light to mental illness.

FOR THE RECORD: OCD is a form of anxiety. If Royce is extremely anxious, he becomes obsessively com pulsed and vis versa.

This is the only reason that makes sense for him to make this such a public issue. It may backfire personally for him in the NBA, but it will advance the cause.

I think this is what is happening. The Rockets are a very young team being built, and they do not want Royce taking the bus even if he pays for it.
Looking forward to CFH magic for the next bball season, Georges style.
