A closer look at Maurice Jones
Here are Maurice Jones’ combined overall stats for his 2 years at USC:
36.3 mpg
11.4 ppg
3.4 apg
2.6 rpg
1.9 spg
2.2 topg
1.7 fpg
35% overall fg
11.1 overall shot attempts per game
3.9 overall shot makes per game
37% from two pt range
6.7 two pt shot attempts per game
2.5 two pt shot makes per game
32% from three pt range
4.4 three pt shot attempts per game
1.4 three pt shot makes per game
65% from the free throw line
3.4 free throw attempts per game
2.2 free throw makes per game
60% of his shots were from two pt range
40% of his shots were from three pt range
I understand that he is 5’7 and that he played for a bad team. I also understand that he shot 37% from two pt range, 32% from three pt range, and 65% from the line. He might not be the best shooter but I’m sure those statistics are lower than they would be if teams weren’t guarding him so closely due to him being the only offensive threat on his team. If he had better players around him I’m sure it would open up his game and his shooting percentages would go up. Also he played 35 mpg which I’m sure led to his legs being tired which goes hand in hand with lower shooting percentages.
Looking at the positives it looks like he is a threat from 2 and 3 pt range with 60% of his shots coming from 2 pt range and 40% of his shots coming from 3 pt range. He averaged 3.4 apg which isn’t great but you also have to consider who he was passing to. If he has better players that are making more shots, and if the pressure isn’t on him to score so much like it was at USC; I could see him distributing the ball very well at Iowa State and averaging 5 or 6 apg. He averaged 12 apg in high school. It looks like he also is a good rebounder for being 5’7 averaging close to 3 rpg. Overall If he came to Iowa State I could see him averaging 9 ppg, 6 apg, and 3 rpg.
We will have very little experience at the PG for the 2013-14 season if Bubu is not on the team. Naz will get 5-10 mpg this year. That is the only experience we would have. Monte would come in having zero experience. Having a RS Junior that played 35 mpg for 2 seasons in a power 6 conference would be a huge get for us. We need him and I really hope that he ends up at Iowa State!

I'm pretty confident that Maurice will not be enrolling at Iowa State.

Re: A closer look at Maurice Jones
We'll see if Jones enrolls or not soon enough. Though the bigger point is ISU is very thin at PG after this year. I like the idea of MJ because of his skills and experience playing in a major conference. But if he or the staff decide he isn't a fit then the team will still need to look for another option either via JC or a different transfer. I obviously like Naz's and Monte's tallent and they will play in 13, I would just feel better if there was another option while they get acclimated to to the team or if an injury were to occur.

Re: A closer look at Maurice Jones
I think somebody posted the NCAA transfer rule a while back that stated a player must sit out one year from the time they enroll at the new school. If he enrolls at the second semester this year, would that mean he wouldn't be eligible until the start of the second semester next year.

That could be true even though i don't see the difference between sitting out a year while you are in your basement at home or at another Division 1 school. Does anyone know if he is enrolled at a community college or anything like that?

Re: A closer look at Maurice Jones
so he has 2 years of eligibility remaining or does he lose one because he is academically inelgible?

You have 5 years from the time you start playing basketball. So he has played 2 years, will sit out this year, and then will play 2 years wherever he transfers. Unless there is a rule that you have to sit out another year when you arrive to the other Division 1 school. I'm not sure if that is the rule or not.
