I wonder how this would have changed if we'd hired Billy Gillispie.

    Best: Floyd
    Worst: McMorgan

I think Floyd keeps that spot for about 3-5 more years until Hoiberg takes it over.

As you know, "coaching" isn't just x's and o's, it is recruiting and everything else - so to me, McD is EASILY the worst coach we have had in decades. Morgan at least got us to the tourney.

Best is a little tougher. Of course, Hoiberg could get there, but he hasn't done it yet. I'm going to go with Floyd, since I think he set Larry up with the right players. I love Larry, but I've gotta give it to Floyd....

Floyd was only here 4 seasons, and I don't think it will take CFH that long to eclipse him. Of course, Floyd's legacy continued after he left with those Fizer/Tinsley teams.

That's true, but if we're going to be completely honest, Hoiberg is still learning the ropes. Awesome coach yes, but he's still getting his feet wet, so to speak. Floyd was a veteran head coach. It will take an extra year or two for Hoiberg to pass Floyd, in my opinion.

Love ya DC but while Floyd was the reason Fizer came here, but he's wasn't anything till Larry came in and laid down the law with MF and got Tinsley here. Floyd gets no credit for JT coming here.

Fair enough; I'll give credit to Larry for what he did with JT and MF.

Re: Post 1980's. Who was Iowa State's worst coach, and who was/is our best?

I think Hoiberg will be the best coach if he stays, and I think there is a good chance of that. I think Hoiberg is a better coach also. Larry Eustachy got the players to play the best defense. Floyd had a good all around system and was a great recruiter, but a bad choice for Iowa State. I like Hoiberg because he sets up a scheme around his players. I don't think many coaches would have had the foresight to do what he did last year. Maybe none. He recruits for the way he wants to play. He has exceeded all of my expectations. I think he does a great job with player relations.

I really wanted to get rid of McDermott, and I also wanted to get rid of Morgan in the worst way. When you get a bad attitude about someone, you become a poor judge about how bad they are. I don't really trust myself on who is the worst.

Re: Post 1980's. Who was Iowa State's worst coach, and who was/is our best?

I have no idea how anyone can say that Morgan was worse that McDermott. Performance-wise, it isn't even close. McDermott is definitely the worst coach we have had.

Best coach is extremely difficult though. Since Johnny coached into the 1990s, I guess I'd have to go with him. The guy built this program and he built Hilton Magic. But there is a good argument for Floyd, and I think its just a matter of time before Fred's legacy eclipses them all. But for now, I'd say Johnny.

Take this on a different tract -

    Dreamiest: Freddy
    Least Dreamiest: Carl Winslow
“They're very, very hard to guard,” Notre Dame head coach Mike Brey said. “They're really good. And with Niang in the middle kind of wheeling and all those guys spreading you out, they're kind of a nightmare matchup. And they're men. They're really men.”

    Best coach: Tim Floyd
Worst coach: Tinsley-less Eustachy, Morgan, and McDermott tie for various reasons. Pure performance wise Tinsley-less Eustachy was an awful coach. McDermott couldn't keep players on campus. Morgan is still sitting in his chair with a blank stare watching the game.

The one topic discussed nearly as much as Big 12 expansion on this site.

That anybody would pick anything but mcd as worst boggles my mind. Dude was terribad here.

Larry sucked without tinsley but I am not arguing with titles.

One guy after he was done here was selling satellites. The other is coaching a Top 16 team with a pre season AA on the squad.

They both STUNK while they were here on an epic scale. I can't stand either one of them.

Best coach based on results has to be LE. I hated the way it ended and the decade of misery it started but back to back big 12 titles.
