Re: Post 1980's. Who was Iowa State's worst coach, and who was/is our best?
I agree with your Hoiberg and Eustacy thing ...I also think that Greg McDermott was by far our worst basketball coach...
Re: Post 1980's. Who was Iowa State's worst coach, and who was/is our best?
Morgan sucked at coaching, but he at least won games or his players won games I guess. Mcdermott was a good guy, and a good "coach" but the problem was that he couldn't win games. He had some pretty good players, and some pretty awful players but I personally couldn't stand McDermott at during his last year.
Re: Post 1980's. Who was Iowa State's worst coach, and who was/is our best?
McDoormat was worst. Will be interesting to see how things work out once Junior leaves and he has to coach without him. Also, will we ever play them at Hilton?

I like this arrangement. But don't agree with it completely.

Crowd-pleasing.
Morgan --good recruiter; clueless coach; no discipline with players; shady assistants his last season
McDermott --poor player relations; mediocre player development; questionable game strategy; did however recruit Brackins, Taylor, Diante , Wes Johnson --NBA players (Justin Hamilton drafted too)
Eustachy -amazing game-day coach...mentally tough (except with booze); rubbed some the wrong way; great guy
Orr - engaging, player/fans favorite; re-energized fan-base; media darling; great home-court coach---terrible on the road
Floyd -- engaging; great coach all-around. -
Hoiberg ---Golden child; perfect in many ways for ISU; great recruiter--sky is the limit; Huge upside

Mac changed the culture, but IMO Rhoads has taken it to another level. coach Mac never got over 50,000 butts in the seats for every home game.
Re: Post 1980's. Who was Iowa State's worst coach, and who was/is our best?
I agree. McCarney is the best Football coach thus far. Rhoads could surpass him. The jury is still out on that one. As far as the worst coach, lol... Don't get me wrong I share the same disdain for Gene Chizic, but it goes to Jim Walden.

I know there is alot of hate for Walden, and he and Chiz both merit worst category but I say the worst is Criner. His violations set our fb program back for decades.

AD BVDV did more damage to Iowa State than any of the coaches in recent memory.

I absolutely agree!

In football what we have right now has to be considered best. In year three he does something no other coach at this school has done. Beat a top five team. As for the worst, I think J. Criner gets that award. If you are going to cheat....at least bring home some hardware.
In basketball.....I will have to go with Johnny. He built it, what else can be said. As for the worst...the big German gets the nod. Why...because losing the "right way".........is, well......for losers.
Re: Post 1980's. Who was Iowa State's worst coach, and who was/is our best?
The fact that McDermott recruited FOUR NBA players in his first two classes and couldn't win more than 6 Big XII games in a season is just mind numbing. He should of done more with the talent he had. At least Morgan made to the tournament, McDermott didn't even sniff it.
Re: Post 1980's. Who was Iowa State's worst coach, and who was/is our best?
Anyone who has Morgan worse than McDermott is clearly blinded by hatred. I realize this site was built on trying to get Wayne Morgan fired but get real. At least ISU was halfway relevant with WM at the helm. This program was the Big 12 punching bag under McDermott's watchful eyes. WM's worst year was still better than anything GMac put on the floor. Thank goodness Fred came in and saved this program before it turned into Nebraska basketball permanently.
This. I don't think anyone can't accurately say with a straight face that McD is a better coach than Morgan, and I think your assessment of why is spot-on. I think Jeremy did a great job of getting this site started, but his pathological hatred of WM rubbed me the wrong way and left a bad taste in my mouth. WM did a lot of good things for the BB program in his short time here; righting the ship after the LE fiasco and putting a pretty good team on the floor that first season, winning at #2 Kansas behind Curtis Stinson and Will Blalock, making the NCAA tournament and winning a game (something that we did not do for the next seven years until last season). Fact; WM won as many games in his first two seasons as CFH has.
As for best coach; I'm going to have to go with TF. LE might have brought home bigger and better hardware, but I think that if TF hadn't been blinded by the bright lights of the pros that he would have kept on bringing bigger and better things to ISU and as far as I know he didn't have the off-court demons that eventually sunk LE. Great recruiter, great X and O's coach, good with PR stuff, the perfect package in my mind, even if some of his teams were offensively challenged.

That is why we are saying Morgan is the worst "coach".
Not sure if this logic works. Morgan acknowledged his shortcomings by not coaching. McDermott tried and did worse. McDermott wins going away (like all his players).
