Re: SDW redshirting this year
Maybe I'm in the minority, but I am kind of bummed about this. I was so happy when he decided to come here and I was looking forward to watching him play. I know it makes sense given his frame and the amount of playing time he will receive. It just sucks to see such a talented player sitting in the bleachers in those "yup, we are sitting out a year" warm-ups in cyclone ally.

Re: SDW redshirting this year
SDW has a similar body to DG, and DG should have done the same thing (imagine DG on last year's team?!).
It's a good move.

You can still look forward to watching him play, and when he does he will be that much more ready physically to compete in the Big 12. In addition he will be that much better if you get a chance to see him play as a senior. Also don't forget the possibility that a player who won't really see the floor much gets frustrated that they are burning a year of eligibility with little to show for it and transfers. Then that unproductive freshman year is all you get to see.
I chuckled at the comments by John and Eric during the game. They thought they had one number upside down on his weight on the roster; the 9 in 190 should have been turned over to a 6.
So does Yancy handle the Basketball team or is that Andrew Moser's job?

Re: SDW redshirting this year
Good move as a redshirt likely increases the overall contributions SDW will make in his Cyclone career, plus it shows some dedication to the program by SDW.
That said, looking towards 2013-14, I sure would not have had a problem with SDW gaining some experience for next year because he was so impressive the coaches were unable to keep off the floor. -
Re: SDW redshirting this year
Think it's best, assuming he doesn't get homesick, partly by sitting on the bench, and transfers. I know this mainly stopped with Fred in control but remans a concern given how bad it was for a long time.

I really liked what I saw from him in the exhibition. Love his length, and the aggressiveness he showed when he went coast to coast. If he develops a consistent shot - he'll be really valuable. Defensively, his length at the wing could be a big plus. He wasn't likely to get many minutes, so this is a good decision - IMO.
looking forward to a backcourt (3 of these 5 on the court at one time, likely) of Jones/ Long/ Morris/ Thomas/ SDW. Now to get some talented depth behind Niang and Gibson...

Correct me if I'm wrong but as a red shirt he can still dress for games and participate in all team activities. It's not the same as sitting out because you transferred. If needed we could play him this year if a need arose.
I'm sure he's bummed, he's a competitor and wants to play.

Re: SDW redshirting this year
At least he won't be sitting out alone. Now that we have Maurice it should make things a little easier for SDW.

Re: SDW redshirting this year
It must be a body issue as we didn't see much of Okoro during the exhibition and he's not RS as far as we know. I like this decision a whole lot. And barring any kind of transfer we're sitting pretty for the next few years at the guard positions. Next year may start out a little rough but imagine once these young guards mature and gain chemistry. Would love to get a solid post though. Once that happens...lookout NCAA

I'm sure he's bummed, he's a competitor and wants to play. Yep he will still travel with the team and sit on the bench just like aaron law did last year

I think it is fantastic that we have such talented players sitting out a year. It means that there is talented players above them and they will get another year in the system.

Re: SDW redshirting this year
If your SDW think about it this way. Waste a year where your prob not going to get much playing time(except junk at the end of games) and waste a year of eligibility, or have a year to lower your risk of injury by not playing with more physical competition and concentrate on lifting weights to get bigger instead of being healthy for each game.
