My hobby has afforded me the opportunity to get into ISU football games, basketball games and hockey games for FREE. How much did you pay for season tickets? My hobby afforded me the opportunity to travel with the team for their NCAA Tournament runs, for FREE. What did you do on your spring break? How much did THAT cost you? My hobby has provided me to opportunity to travel the WORLD playing music. I have played for four US Presidents. I have played with world-class musicians. I have had the honor meeting and getting to know some jazz legends. What has your hobby done for you?
In reading through the other threads on CF, I am struck by the amount of venom directed everywhere. It was only a matter of time before it was turned in the direction of the band, in some form. Go ahead, rip on the band all you like. These are tough kids. They have to be to do what they do every week during football season and during basketball season. Ultimately, ISU Bands have been here before you and will be here long after you are gone. congrats bro? i cant tell if your bragging or mocking anyone that has never done anything with a musical instrument. Students that play in band generally have higher GPA and do get to go on a ton of school paid trips yada yada yada you could blabber about it for days. But what this thread is talking about is how the band should lay off on dumb crap they yell that is completely irrelevant to the game.

2. when their songs are over just become part of the student section. jump up and down, yell OHH, do the cyclone power stuff, airball, etc. if we all did the same thing instead of the band doing their own little thing on the side i think it could be way cooler. i understand if the band is trying to start some new things. but its hard to get all the students to pick up on that. Ah, I didn't even consider that option, but I probably should have. You should know better than to make it sound like the whole band is a bunch of uninformed sports-idiots then.

Wow, maybe the game has changed a lot in 5 years, but I can't think of anyone I ever knew who did marching band or pep band for that measely 1 credit. Sure, the easy A was a fringe benefit, but there are much less time-consuming ways of boosting the ol' GPA if you didn't have any interest in actually being in an athletic band.
And yes, I had my share of embarassment with some of the band "traditions" during games, but I stand by my point: They are trying to get SOMETHING going, and it's basically only noticeable when the surrounding students/fans are sitting on their hands or standing with folded arms.

This times a million! I would not be practicing for 15 hours a week just so I could get my 1 credit on my gpa!

Originally Posted by iacyguy you practice 15 hours a week on that music? you gotta be joking man That might be a little high, but regular rehearsals for marching band alone probably gets you close to 10 hours a week not counting anything on gameday. Obviously way less for basketball band.

I was also in band while playing basketball so I had to do both. People said we had the best band in the conference. Know why? Because we didn't try to hard and looked like we genuinely had fun. Ironic?

In fact both of them were actively discouraged from staying in band and caught a lot of **** from some of the more snobby professors in that department for sticking with it for all four years. Did you in fact go to UNI, where that actually is a requirement?
