Not many teams do not see a big drop-off in defense when there best defender goes out.
Tavon Sledge played 28 minutes, got 7 rebounds and 5 assists off the bench for Iona.
Pelle didn't play.
There is obviously a learning curve there and this team will improve a lot of the course of the season. I usually get upset pretty easily when it comes to basketball because I'm a no mistakes, no turnovers type of guy, and we didn't do that last night. I also never leave games against small conference teams feeling great, because we are almost always able to win just be better athletes. Instead of being fundamentally better and outworking the opponent.
If our team turns out to be good this, year games like yesterday are great for the future. Remember how much adversity we went through in the non-conference last year? Then, remember how many close games we pulled out in conference play?
KL will respond. He's a vet, I'm not worried about him after one poor performance.
Also about Lucious. Obviously a bad game, but there's no way that will be his average game. If so, he'll obviously be benched. He made a few boneheaded plays and I'm sure Hoiberg will let him know what's up if he does that **** (and he got in his face after getting called for a carry on a 2-1 where he could have had Clyburn with an easy alley oop).
I actually had a dream last night about ISU Basketball later in the season. We were awesome...I hope that's the case in real life :)
Something that happened last night which indicated increased depth to me: When guys made a really boneheaded play, Fred subbed them out immediately. We're not in the place where we just have to accept it because nobody else can contribute anymore.
That helps me to believe that we'll keep improving and growing all season long. I like the extended minutes that the freshmen got, and not in garbage time. Those guys will contribute nicely.
Our freshmen and sophomore really surprised me last night. I think Niang will show people that he's better right now than Nerlens Noel (that should be obvious to anyone on here) and that Naz Long was very under recruited.
I love what Niang brings to the table. He is going to be a fan favorite for the next 4 years for sure. Consistent, consistent, consistent. Naz Long has been a very pleasant surprise but seems to get ahead of himself a bit. Something a freshman will learn pretty quickly. I love what we're seeing from the younger guys. It makes me feel a lot better about next season.
In good news we are currently 2nd in the country in rebounding!! But 112th in assists...
I see that our coach described us as "awful" and not being the same team that he sees in practice.
In early November, I'm going to allow myself to take that as a good sign since we won by 23.
Never worried about us winning. Southern played their starters for most of the first half. After they got in foul trouble and started to wear down it was evident that they couldn't keep up. They didn't have a bench. They were hitting a lot those first ten minutes as well. I was never worried.
Did anyone notice the lack of endurance in Niang?
Just imagine what kind of player he can be when he gets in shape and turns that baby fat into muscle.
