Re: Impact of RW's early struggles on Hoiberg
as far as I can tell, Fred Hoiberg is the first GM/scout to ever make a mistake evaluating a player. No one else in the nba that talks to FH on a daily basis has ever made a mistake before, because they all know how easy it is to predict how players will work out in the nba in the future.
Re: Impact of RW's early struggles on Hoiberg
For the record, I'm in no way melting down over this. As some have pointed out, RW's career is by no means over, and Hoiberg has built his reputation over many years. But I liken the situation to agreeing to be a professional reference for someone in a tightly-knit profession. If you choose to vouch for someone, you are, to some degree, putting your own reputation on the line.
Re: Impact of RW's early struggles on Hoiberg
College coaches are not responsible for what their players do once they leave the program and enter the NBA, period.
Re: Impact of RW's early struggles on Hoiberg
This is dumb. If ISU has a guy with NBA potential on the team in the future, I doubt anyone is gonna look back to what RW has done with his career. The NBA is notorious for drafting on potential, not necessarily caring about someone's baggage.
Re: Impact of RW's early struggles on Hoiberg
Fred Hoiberg knows more about how the NBA works than we'll ever understand. Royce was drafted in the first round to the NBA despite challenges discussed. What do you think that will do for Fred in the eyes of potential recruits that also want to become millionaires in the NBA?

QFT.
If you really want to overanalyze it, at least be logical. You know what would hurt Fred and the program more? Casting doubt about RW, thus being known to compromise the efforts of his players to make millions and fulfill there dreams of being drafted.
Re: Impact of RW's early struggles on Hoiberg
Fred is a college coach and Royce thrived here. Sounds more like an endorsement to play here than an indictment.
Re: Impact of RW's early struggles on Hoiberg
Fred gave every person honest information no different than a recommendation from your boss. They ask specific questions and with reputation on the line your boss (or coach) gives honest answers while highlighting the positives.
Re: Impact of RW's early struggles on Hoiberg
I don't know that I would worry about it a lot. I highly doubt that Fred will have to vouch for a players with an extreme anxiouty disorder ever again.
Re: Impact of RW's early struggles on Hoiberg
OP - GMAC is not coming back so no reason to troll on Fred.
Re: Impact of RW's early struggles on Hoiberg
Could have small affect. But I think Fred will put plenty of players in the NBA so it won't really matter.
Re: Impact of RW's early struggles on Hoiberg
Lots of basketball left to be played before any judgements can be made on RW's career.
Re: Impact of RW's early struggles on Hoiberg
I had this thought during the hold out and I think there is some risk for at least some level of impact to Fred's credibility. I think it's really small though.
In the end the NBA is based on talent. If Fred keeps producing talent the league will keep taking players from him.
You can also look at this from another angle and say Fred must have done a heck of a job with Royce to make it through a season without the slightest hitch.
Re: Impact of RW's early struggles on Hoiberg
Typical Cubby fan.. "THE SKY IS FALLING!! FRED ISN'T TRUST WORTHY!!! STEVE BARTMAN NEEDS TO DIE!"
Too soon on the Bartman comment??
Re: Impact of RW's early struggles on Hoiberg
It will probably make GMs wanna hire Fred to get the most out of their NBA talent.
