I think you are far too cavalier about a real problem. RW was a first round pick. NBA general managers are judged on very highly on the production of those picks. If RW ends up being a bust, psychlone's concerns are going to end up hurting Fred and the ISU program.
Nope. If anything, doesn't this improve Fred's credibility as a coach?
Fred managed and mentored Royce White better than Tubby Smith could (a coach with a national title to his resume)
Fred out-recruited coach Calipari (another coach with ONE national title) to get Royce to Ames and Royce was arguably the best player on the court during the ISU-Kentucky game
Fred also coached Royce (and the team) to wins against Bill Self and Jim Calhoun - two more coaches with titles.
So is Fred Hoiberg a better coach than Kevin McHale? I don't think that's a fair comparison, but maybe Fred finally has a leg to stand-on when it comes to whether he is a competent coach.
Oh, and didn't Fred get NBA tryouts for Jamie Vanderbeken, Jake Anderson, and Scott Christopherson? Seems to me that maybe that will do more for getting talented high-schoolers/Juco players that maybe wouldn't have a shot at an NBA roster.
I actually think that this can be spun a positive for Fred on the recruiting trail:
It demonstrates his ability to help troubled kids focus under his watch and shows that Ames/ISU is a place where the community supports, embraces, and allows someone to really flourish due to that level of support.
The issue here is Royce lost the safty net and support system he had in Ames. Hes now in the real world which is 10x tougher than college. He will adjust and decompress and be a nice player in the NBA. Maybe some of you guys should write him letters of encouragement instead of tashing him and Fred on this forum.
We will probably never know for sure, but I doubt this will have a damaging effect on FH's reputation. Those who know him from his playing and working days in the NBA based their opinions of FH on things long before Royce White came on the scene.
FH was honest about his expericence with Royce. The anxiety was there, but it was dealt with by the player, the coaches and the team. The result was that Royce kept his nose clean so to speak during his two years in Ames, and literally led the team to the NCAA tourney for the first time in years. Along the way, he developed into an outstanding player that the whole country say on national tv, and one team chose to make him a first round draft choice.
I doubt that McHale feels that FH mislead him or anything like that. For all we know, he or others from the Houston staff may be on the phone with FH trying to figure out how to get through to Royce.
I hope this does not become a distraction for FH, the ISU staff, or the team.

This is how I see it as well, Fred handled Royce's situation just fine, the rest of Royce's career shouldn't reflect on Fred.
