Its honorable that he's standing up for what he believes in and is trying to raise awareness for anxiety disorders but from the outside looking in it looks like he is doing it the wrong way.

I don't think he is helping the sigma at all.

However, back to my post: the employer has a moral obligation to provide reasonable assistance but is not obliged to do more than "reasonable" assistance. And as employees, we all have problems but we can't make those problems our employer's problems. We have to navigate the problems so we can keep on performing.

Everyone has problems, from big to small but it doesn't and will never work to make employer solving the problems. I remember a coworker whose mom suffering from cancer and she had to stay overnight in the hospital every other day and didn't have enough sleep. We were working 16-18 hours a day and it was hard to see her struggling but the work had to be done. My bosses helped by accomodating if she had to leave a little bit early or arrive late but still, the expectation was she needed to finish her job.
Royce could be trying to fix that for all we know

No problem with how he stands for something he believes in. But on the other hand, he signed a contract with the Rockets. What is in the contract ? When you sign a contract, you'll have to fulfill your obligations. Not fulfilling your obligations is not the right thing to do.

I would think if he wasn't fulfilling his contract they would file a grievance

Maybe the Rockets are trying to work with him and don't want to do that yet. And if the Rockets are violating something in the contract, maybe RW should file a grievance.

In any case, anxiety or no anxiety, missing practice and calling out ownership via Twitter is probably not the best or correct way to handle the situation.

They could be set up with a therapist since that is the best way to fix mental health issues for the long term. I went to one at one point and they ask you to do things you already do and so sometimes you get the sense they truly cannot help. This could be the reason Royce doesn't go and wants his own doctor who has helped him in the past and understands him. And when people go out and call Royce selfish, once again you do not understand this disorder. We (who have this disorder) try to do soooo many things to protect ourselves it is hard. I couldn't go to a funeral for a family member once so people thought I was disrespectful. Its not a matter of doing something and getting used to it. You have to find the right balance of how to do it. It appears to me the Rockets do not understand that part and think what they are doing is correct, which I applaud them for trying. But the fact of the matter is, this disorder is far more complex than what meets the eye. As the famous saying goes, do not just until you've walked a mile in someone shoes. Not one of these people judging him to be a bad person has any clue what he is going through.

While I don't doubt that anxiety is a serious mental illness and it very hard at times to live with, do you really believe Royce has handled this the best way possible? More so, in regards to social media, retweeting stuff and calling people out for criticizing him?

I'm not trying to facetious, I really want to get someone’s opinion on this situation that has, to an extent, dealt with what Royce has.

I know general anxiety is very serious and debilitating sometimes - but it's considered very treatable with proper medication and counseling. The same can be said with far more serious disorders (schizophrenia, etc.). I know this is a very hard road that Royce has had put before him, but this isn't something that has to be crippling - and that's what he's doing right now. Either he's letting the anxiety win and hamper his performance, or he's using it as an excuse but really wants PT (see the most recent articles).

I love Royce, and wish him the best, but maybe it's time to look at getting his anxiety meds adjusted. I know it's not that simple, but anything has to help at this point.

You fix it by standing up for yourself or your condition behind closed doors. You don't fix that by taking every opportunity to badmouth your employer in an extremely public forum and while doing that failing to do anything that is expected of you to keep your job. Not many in the workforce would get away with what he's doing.

It would be perceived a whole lot better had he showed up at training camp in shape and willing to do what he needs to do to become a contributor to the TEAM as he puts the crap out on twitter, although I still wouldn't say that's right. What he's doing now isn't good at all.

That's right shut your mouth and like it. Behind closed doors of course. That's how every battle is won.

Is his approach perfect? No. However, you can't fight to break a stigma by not talking about it.

I've yet to see a true "bad mouthing" tweet by Royce. He's responded to what he's classified as inaccurate information from the media and asking for Transparency and Consistency from the Rockets.

Yes, there's probably a much better way to approach not only the situation but also the fight to understand anxiety however; doing it all behind closed doors isn't going to get it done.

Personally, I think this is being handled poorly on the Rockets part so its forcing Royce to take action. Notice when we got Royce that Hoiberg did a TON of research on this kid to make sure he wasn't going to be an issue and got to know this kid inside and out. There is no way the Rockets took the same amount of time Hoiberg did to get to know him. They look at it and say ok lets get the help WE think can help him instead of the help ROYCE thinks can help. Royce is being surrounded by people who believe they know best for him when in reality he knows best.

I think he is handling it fine. He is doing it in a manner that he shows that people do not have to have money to do what he is doing. People say oh show it on the court then you'll get the peoples respect and build from there. No, start now and show you are not only going to be the face of mental illness awareness, but also the heart. I see so many athletes come out and become the face for things like Kobe or MJ with shoes, but are they fixing they fighting for the issues that happen in the companies? No they just make the profit. Go look at Magic Johnson, he took HIV into his own hands. He was the face of it and the heart of it. When he was told he had it, he didn't just sit back and let people tell him what to do, he took it on himself and pushed to play basketball still. This is what Royce is doing.

Just a small addition to the "behind closed doors" train of thought.

Yesterday, before Royce took his voice to Twitter, someone from within the Rockets made sure the media had tidbits about Royce missing this or skipping that (which may or may not be accurate)...and so on. Yet, Royce has to stay out of the media and do all his work from behind closed doors. Got it.

Doesn't Royce have an agent? If he does, he should probably find a new one. There's a reason most professional athletes let their agents handle these types of situations.

Anxiety is just as serious as any other disorder. It can lead to depression and suicide. He didn't let anxiety win. He was diagnosed with it late. After it is built into your brain it makes it more difficult to fight it. Its called situation anxiety when he gets to being on a plane. He has had it in the past and that first started from a chemical inbalance. Now it is in his head so when he gets on the plane he thinks himself into being anxious instead of the chemicals actually causing him to become terrified. Very Very time consuming in fixing this.

Hopefully they can work out an agreement that both sides will honor. It is incredibly disgusting some of the stuff people tweet at him though. Hopefully he just uses it as motivation once he gets on the court.

I feel like Royce is somebody that will handle stuff like this head on. I know he has an agent or at least hired one when he entered the draft. Letting the agent handle it would be the ideal way, Royce just doesn't seem to like the ideal way.
