Re: Balanced Cyclones gain comfortable win over Campbell
We need to get better on the glass. We looked awful tonight. That being said Ejim of course did well.

Re: Balanced Cyclones gain comfortable win over Campbell
I was disappointed with Gibson on defense and on the glass. I think he can play well there. He has shown flashes in other games. He needs to get a mentality for it. He has the talent. Besides that, what was interesting about this game is that different people did well at different points. This is going to be a really hard team to prepare for, because we can hurt people in so many different ways, the bench is almost as good as the starters. I have never seen such a deep team at ISU, and CFH is obviously interested in utilizing his depth. I really like his thinking there also.

Percy's gifted down low but his internal clock seems hurried down there too. Couple times he rushed putbacks after rebounds or would go way too hard off the glass. Ejim and McGee were both outstanding. Loved lucious' assist to turnovers. Still a few bad shot decisions. Overall nitpicking but things still to work on to get from good to great, then elite.

Re: Balanced Cyclones gain comfortable win over Campbell
I think rebounding will continue to be a theme. Stat that jumps out to me: Babb and McGee combined to get the same amount of rebounds as Ejim, Gibson, and Booker combined. It's nice when the guards chip in on the boards, but it shouldn't be the norm. To be fair, the combined minutes were 55 to 47, respectively.

Speaking of Percy, until someone can prove to me otherwise I'm not convinced he physically has a right hand. I'm positive he's got 2 left hands attached.

Re: Balanced Cyclones gain comfortable win over Campbell
They need rebounding and inside defense. I would like to see somebody that is strong enough who can consistently play outstanding inside defense on a strong good big man. I have a feeling if we don't find someone it will come back to haunt the Cyclones. Of course, I have very high goals also.

Clyburn hasn't shown that he's a stand out player yet. He's played well but you don't get that feeling that he can go off. It's early, I know.

He's still putting up good numbers though. He may just be a little better version of Ejim, where he doesn't take over games, but is very consistent. It's nice to have a go-to guy, but considering we have 3 bench players that will likely average 30+ points between them (Niang, McGee and Percy), we may not need a guy that can go off for 25.
As Chris said, we are balanced. That is our strength, but it may be our weakness occasionally as well.

Re: Balanced Cyclones gain comfortable win over Campbell
Ejim looks the most improved to me. He is more smooth with the ball. I love that he's hit some three's and that he continues to get scrappy baskets. Did anyone see that reverse dunk coming? He didn't have that move last year.
I think this team will be as good as Lucious. If he can be excellent like tonight, for the entire season I think we win a couple games in the NCAA's.
At the same time, I watched the Kansas-Mich. St game last week and those teams look like they are on a different physical level from ISU. Not saying we can't upset them, but they looked tough.
I'm really excited to watch the Cincinnati game - should tell us a lot about our season.

Which player on this team is most likely to have that 35 or 40 point outing? Right now, I'm not sure. And maybe that is a good thing. We are balanced. However, it is nice to have that threat of someone that could go off in a big way. Maybe that is Clyburn but he doesn't look comfortable yet. McGee can score but I don't see him going off for high numbers. I almost think Niang is the most likely to go score 30+.

If that's the threshold for a great player then we are definitely without one. I think 35+ scoring nights are extremely rare in college bball though.

While I understand where you're coming from, I don't think Will has felt any need to really take over to this point as everyone has been pretty good offensively. A game where shots are difficult to find will be telling of what Clyburn can do when we need a score, I'm not guaranteeing this will happen, but I think we'll get a better picture of his ability when the talent level picks up.

Re: Balanced Cyclones gain comfortable win over Campbell
The rebounding is the biggest concern I have too. I think the bad shot selection issues will be resolved by FH, but then let's not forget he sort of gives most of the players the green light too.
This team wants to run and push the ball up court, and that has to start with the rebounding, in particular from the front line. The team has out-rebounded the competition so far, but when you watch the game, you will see the rebounds they miss, especially the offensive rebounds. They just do not do a good job of blocking out in many cases, and too often do not grab the ball and hang on to it. It's not a big problem agaisnt the lower level teams they are playing now, but if it continues, it could be a huge problem as the competition gets better and in Big 12 play.
It may be that so far, this team has just played somewhat to the level of their competition. Sometimes they seem a little bored and distracted out there and it kind of turns into a pick-up scrimmage.
It will be interesting to see how they play against some top 25 competition this week.
