Iowa State hasn't had a non-con win that good since Wayne Morgan was coaching.
Good example, though. (But that Big 12 was a better conference than this Big 12 conference.)

The thing the Big 12 has going for it is that KU is still a top ten team. During the Pac-12's awful year last year, nobody was ranked. Also, our bottom tier (TT, UT, TCU) isn't quite as bad and won't drag us down as far as the Pac (ASU, USC, Utah) last year.

I think Iowa State goes 10-8 in the conference, 7-2 at home and 3-6 on the road. I know it's early but this team hasn't looked good on the road so far.
We'll need some help in the Big XII tourney to make the NCAA but I think we'll ultimately get in.

We've also only made one tournament since then, which was last year, and our only opportunity was at Michigan with a team full of transfers coming off a home loss to UNI. A win over Kansas would go a long way in getting us in at 10-8.

To build on that, Texas had only two or three iffy RPI losses (Oregon State, UCLA and @Oklahoma State), plus non-conference losses to UNC (got a No. 1 seed) and N.C. State (which ended up as 11 seed, same as UT), two wins over ISU (an 8 seed) and split w/ KSU (8 seed).
9-9 with that resume, vs. that overall schedule — it was good enough.
It isn't always good enough.

It isn't always good enough. We lost two road and one neutral game, two of which against ranked teams. Those two losses seem comparable to @UNC by 19 and home NC St. by 3 IMO. They beat Temple at home and UCLA on the road but that was a 19-14 UCLA squad playing in the Pac 12 who lost handily to the only two ranked teams they played. Even with our weaker conference I think 10-8 with one would get us in and 11-7 with one would be a lock.

We'll need some help in the Big XII tourney to make the NCAA but I think we'll ultimately get in. Knock on wood for no jinx but I think we win more than three on the road. I'll say 4-5 on the road and either 6-3 or 7-2 at home. I bet ISU will lose to a poor opponent at home and cause another severe meltdown here. Remind me to stay away from this board afterwards, considering what happened after ISU lost to a decent team on the road this time.
I'll take ISU at 10-3 in non-con, 11-7 in conf., and 1-1 in Kansas City. 22-11 record gets us dancing with an 11 seed.
