It was last night, but that hasn't been the case in some of the other games. It didn't seem like Clyburn was ready for how physical the game was last night.

Clyburn can't dribble. Too high and stripped way to easily.
He is going to have to toughen up. He can't get to the rim against good teams. For that matter, the whole team needs to toughen up. I only listen to John and Eric. But it is unbelievable how many times you hear John say "ball poked away", or "into the lane, loses control", or "has it knocked away".
It sort of bothers me that we can't get more contribution out of our HS players in each class. So far, 1 HS player per class that can contribute is the norm and is not optimal. I guess Fred's first class had two with Ejim and Godfrey but really those were McDoormat's recruits.
Last year Gibson was a nice addition, but that was it along with Sledge (bust) and Clyburn/Lucious.
This year, clearly Niang is a stud, but Naz can't find time on an OK team so that sort of gives me concern. Okoro doesn't seem to be close and will probably never be more than a role player. Same with SDW in all likelihood.
The next two classes are HUGE for Fred's success. MM and MT had better both live up to their ranking. Jones will hopefully help buy time for MM and Custer. The two post players are reaches and will probably be nothing more than 5-10 min/game guys.
Hopefully Fred can land a really good post and wing for the 2014 class or we may always be stuck in the rat race of replacing 1-2 year players every season.
I think he has to improve his ball handling to get playing time against good competition.
Against Alabama A&M (98-40 game) he had 7 assists and 1 t/o. The rest of the season he has 4 assists and 12 t/o.
Royce at point looked like a mistake at this point last year.
You are assuming that all combo guards are true 2 guards who happen to be able to fill in (poorly) at the point. There are some combo guards who are true point guards who have expanded their skills to be able to play the 2 very well.
Kantrail Horton is an example of a combo guard who was a 2 guard who had (good) point guard skills. He often slid over to the point when Tinsley took a seat. While he was no Mel - no other guard in the country was - he could have easily started and succeeded at the point for many teams in the Big 12, including ISU if Mel went down.
I think it was Nurse who slid over to pg when Tinsley went out since Nurse was the pg the previous year.
Nurse did play PG the previous year despite being the closest thing to a true 2 the Elite 8 team had. Horton played quite a bit of point when Tinsley was out. Nurse guarded the other teams point more often than Horton did because Horton had the *ahem* size to guard the 3.
There were many posters at this time last year complaining about Royce playing point, it wasn't until we got into the Big12 schedule until that crowd started to tone things down. Not saying clyburn is the answer at point, and i don't think we want to run him there as much as we have been but have been forced to when Lucious gets too out of control and starts turning it over. I think having him bring it up every once in a while could throw the other team off and creat mis-matches much like with Royce last year though. Obviously Clyburn had an awful game all around last night, nothing he did looked good.
Well I don't disagree, but we seem to be getting combos that aren't really great at either. Allen was solid at SG, and could probably play spot duty at PG. This year we have Lucious who is a true PG, but plays with more of a 2 guard mentality and is very careless with the ball. We brought in Naz who is probably more of a 2/combo. Next year MM will hopefully be a true PG or a highly capable combo.
From what I've read on the internet, both MM and Custer are combo guards. I just hope that one of them ends up being a commanding PG.
I think if Fred starts giving KL the hook after some of those decisions we may start to see more of what the team needs come Conference season.
