Re: Should ISU have done more to keep Greg and Doug McDermott in Ames?
I need more free time right now. Why does fate put me in these situations?

Re: Should ISU have done more to keep Greg and Doug McDermott in Ames?
GMac was snakebit at ISU after the WJ transfer. He never recovered from that. He needed a new start and got it. Actually, the situation with KJ in wrestling is similar to me...just can't seem to catch a break with injuries and transfers. Then the losing starts and all momentum is gone.
To me, there's a couple of key points to having a good coach:
1. Fit: Do they fit the culture of the location/university. Will they be happy there long term? GMac fit well, so does/did FH, CPR, KJ, DMac, LE. Chizik did not. It's questionable whether WM did.
2. Coaching ability: Can they teach the X's and O's? Can they develop players? CPR and GMac get high grades here. Chizik, WM, DMac not so much.
3. Recruiting: Can they get the players they need to succeed in their system? Chizik did OK here. FH and CPR are doing just fine. KJ is struggling. DMac struggled. GMac and WM did OK.
4. Installing a culture: This is getting kids to play smart and together, but also sticking with the program win or lose and staying out of trouble with the law/academics. After WJ, GMac's team culture took a big hit and he couldn't keep kids on the team. CPR is a shining example of installing a great team culture.

Just teasing Couldn't resist.
I like the analysis, because we all have a tendency to oversimplify success or lack thereof, when it's a combination of things that come into play. I'm sure some fans will argue about your specific categories and the level of success of specific coaches.
I appreciate how you assessed it in a larger context.

A curse on all of your houses for the fact that this **** is still on the front page because it is still being discussed. I clicked thinking it would have to have devolved into some sort of witty banter to still be on the front page, but nope...there's still people freely discussing the merits of Cascade's finest at ISU.
<spits on floor, leaves thread>
*no offense to Cascadeclone, unless you're GMAC

If Gmac was even a decent tactical coach and developer while he was here things would have been very different. Especially his third year with Brackins, Garrett, and Gilstrap.

It's not that difficult.
1. Someone who won't underestimate what type of athlete to recruit
2. Someone who is prepared and isn't constantly blindsided by events
3. Willng to adjust
GMAC went 0-3 at ISU.

How many scholarship players did he leave McDreamy, 1? That is why I was surprised he did not recruit his boy. His boy would have stuck around for four years.
