We want to compete on a national level and in order to do so, we need to stop playing High School teams. Look at Michigan State, Butler, Duke, UNC, Long Beach State. All of these teams have beefed up their schedules to player tougher competition to prepare them for the postseason. Playing "cupcakes" does nothing and is basically like a glorified practice.
I've wanted a tougher schedule for a while, and Fred's been beefing it up bit by bit. I'm satisfied, and I don't believe that a few cupcakes hurt.
How in the world did you manage to include Long Beach State with those powerhouse teams that people tune in to see? Those teams have ESPN involved in their noncon schedules, because they're big draws. Long Beach State? How did you get there?
Nice work calling out other fans, too. That always goes well.

And i hate fans like you that are clueless on scheduling and thinks everyone needs to schedule extremely difficult schedules.
Hell, this year with a team that everyone knew was going to take time to gel with this many new players, beefing up the schedule only meant more opportunities to show off how not ready we are.
Re: Non-conference schedule needs to be beefed up in 2013
I am not sure what else you want them to do. They played BYU, Iowa, Cincinnati, and UNLV. That is about as hard as I want it. You can't jsut schedule whoever you want unless you want to go on the road the entire time which makes no sense either. Most years the B12 is plenty tough and gives you plenty of chances for good wins. Scheduling is not the issue. This year the conference is a little down but 9 out of 10 years conference play plus the above is plenty. Problem is, you have to win some, and ISU won zero this year.
Re: Non-conference schedule needs to be beefed up in 2013
Our schedule has actually been pretty tough compared to recent years. I'm just happy it hasn't been harder because we would have more losses. The tough teams would be scheduled at away or at a neutral site, because as someone previously said, good teams don't want to schedule road games. We have played BAD away from Hilton this year. No need to want more of that until this team comes together.

So...football schedule non-con is too tough. Basketball schedule non-con is too easy. Do I have that right?

One of these is not like the others.
Re: Non-conference schedule needs to be beefed up in 2013
Other teams play cupcakes to, this concept that every game Michigan State plays is world beater isn't correct. They have Texas Southern, Boise State, Bowling Green, Oakland, Louisiana Lafayette, Nicholls State, Tuskegee, Loyola and Arkansas Pine Bluff. They have plent of easy wins scheduled.
Plus they have the luxury of other teams lining up to play them, ISU does not.

Wisconsin at Florida
Kansas at Ohio State
Virginia Tech at West Virginia
UNLV at California
USC at New Mexico
Arkansas at Michigan
Minnesota at USC
Arizona at Clemson
Florida at Arizona
North Carolina at Long Beach State
North Carolina at Texas
Texas at Michigan State
So, you're telling me teams are afraid to travel to ISU because of Hilton, yet are willing to play in venues equally as tough (Florida, Ohio State, Michigan State, Michigan, Arizona, and New Mexico)? Hilton is a great home court advantage. But ISU is more than capable of scheduling good teams to come play. See: Michigan next year, Virginia a few years ago.

Play teams that have football programs at the D-I level. At least they'd have some sort of name recognition.
Where is Southern, other than in the South? Campbell? Iowa is guilty of it too. WTF is a Coppin State?

But do you see how much better those cupcakes are than the garbage we're playing this year? Boise State is a bubble team right now, Oakland is always pretty decent, Bowling Green is a middle of the pack MAC team. I'm not saying they have to play a BCS level team every game, just play better cupcake games.

Playing "cupcakes" gets your team to more than 10 total wins on the season (and towards the somewhat still respected 18-win range). You really want us playing all top-100 teams each season before we even hit the Big 12? I don't remember the past team mentioned on the bubble who was let into the tournament with 12 wins just because they "beefed up" their non-conference schedule.
Re: Non-conference schedule needs to be beefed up in 2013
If we do a big12/sec challenge. Any idea on what team we will play? I'm assuming baylor will get kentucky. Mizzou gets kansas. Florida gets texas? Who would be a fun match up?

They see the value of getting those teams at home in return for playing them at the away venue. I dont think they see that value with us yet.
