Re: Register: Big Four Classic basketball tickets selling quickly
I'm just going to throw this out there....why not make it a two-day tourney? ISU/Drake and Iowa/UNI (switch it up each year) and then on 2nd day losers play each other and winners play each other. I think that would draw a lot more interest.
This way, the "mythical" state championship is still preserved too.
I could see that even with that set-up, you could still continue the Iowa/ISU home and home series each year......althougth I understand why that may not be desirable.

Re: Register: Big Four Classic basketball tickets selling quickly
Count me in the "going to both games" crowd.
Am I the only one who has friends that are fans of/attended Iowa/UNI? Making a group event out of it, should be a good time.

Re: Register: Big Four Classic basketball tickets selling quickly
UNI needs to play only at ISU and Iowa if they are paid enough money as their athletic department is hurting for dollars. They have played several teams superior to ISU and Iowa. Louisville, Memphis and Stanford. a decent George Mason team and still have UNLV to play.
There is no reason for Drake to play ISU in a larger arena as their small gym has not been filled the last few times ISU has played there. This ISU season ticket holder doesn't want these teams replaced by Texas Southwest Bible college. I'll be at the game Saturday but not happy about it.

Re: Register: Big Four Classic basketball tickets selling quickly
So let me summarize:
1) due to the media mafia, this game won't be seen outside the state of Iowa? No CycloneTV? Great.
2) we have given away a home game and the money we would make in the interest of goodwill? World peace? Great.
The series with UNI and Drake need to end--there is nothing in it for ISU. All the upside is on the UNI and Drake side of the table.

Lots of griping on the Panther Nation site. Some are even "boycotting" the Big 4 in hopes that it is a failure and they can somehow go back to the way it was. It is pathetic. They need to grow up, go to the game, and cheer on their team. A bad turnout by your fans will make UNI look bad, even if they have the best team.

Re: Register: Big Four Classic basketball tickets selling quickly
UNI thinks that it is because we are "afraid" to play them at their place. It is simply because there is absolutely no benefit for us to ever play there. The same reason we don't play at UNO, at Florida Gulf Coast, at Northen Arizona, ect. The only way to get us back to playing home and homes would be for us to get 2 home games for every away game, and that is a gift in itself. I think it is a little ridiculous that we would ever be expected to play at Drake.
UNI shouldn't have to worry about it anyway since they can get into big tourneys as a bracketbuster mid major type team so you would think they wouldn't need us. However, the money we provide obviously keeps them wanting to play us, even with this type of an event.
The worst thing about this whole event is it removes one highly charged game from Hilton in the non conference schedule. It was always nice to get that first taste of a really packed Hilton and a rowdy student section in late November or early December. I'd be willing to do a 2 for 1 type deal to bring those games back, and UNI is always a solid mid major team (they've kicked our ***** lately for sure) to put on the resume every year.
Also, reading this thread over at UNI's site it seems as though they really, really hate Fran for some reason, but do not hate Fred. Most want the home and home with ISU back. http://www.panthernation.com/showthread.php?t=48926

"He is the toughest I have ever been around, physically and mentally," Burnham said. "You can beat him down but you’re not going to beat him out. He’s got the mindset of, ‘If you’re going to get me out of this game, you’re going to have to kill me.’ That’s about where he is."

Re: Register: Big Four Classic basketball tickets selling quickly
Here one thing that needs to be tweaked if this is to go forward.
The Classic should take place BEFORE Iowa and Iowa State play their game. It would add a little more intrigue as fans would in a way be scouting up close the rival team in anticipation for the upcoming match-up.
I think it is a bit awkward with the way the timing works now.

I dont mind playing both schools, it gives fans something to get excited about earily in the year and gives the team someone to play that has a pulse.

ISU or Iowa @ UNI= full arena. Same as above.
Full session tickets for this deal:
ISU fans attend the ISU game. Many of their seats are vacant for Iowa-UNI. Same goes for Drake fans.
Iowa fans attend the Iowa-UNI game. Many of their seats are empty for the ISU-Drake game. Same goes for UNI fans.
There's no way, even if they achieve a sellout, that the place is more than 60% full for any of these games, whereas the place would be packed and focused at either small school. Drake at ISU this year would be very close to a full house in attendance.
There will be a lot of paid-for, empty seats at each of these Wells Fargo games. Maybe some ISU fans will stay and watch Iowa be pummeled by UNI?
Looking forward to CFH magic for the next bball season, Georges style. -
Re: Register: Big Four Classic basketball tickets selling quickly
All of you griping about playing at UNI or Drake, its because its an in state rivalry. You guys are worse then UNI/Drake fans. Pretty sure UNC played at Evansville a couple years back, and theres other BCS school that play @MVC schools too. You act like were playing at a sunbelt arena. Miami played at FGCU this year. Seriously, maybe Iowa State and Iowa realize its important for UNI and Drake fans to have home games against us too. Plus I know the players on the team like playing on the road and UNI is a pretty hostile place to play.
Everyone that complains about playing @ Drake or @Uni should just come out and say "Im sick of Iowa State losing at UNI and at Drake" if Iowa State was dominating UNI and Drake every year, nobody would care.
I'm excited for this experience, as I think it'll be great to see 14,500 in state fans, it'll have an NCAA tourney feel to it.

Re: Register: Big Four Classic basketball tickets selling quickly
I don't get where this "we don't get anything from playing at UNI" thing came from. Last I knew, wins on the road against good teams meant something... I 100% agree with UNI fans that the reason this came about was Iowa (first) and ISU were afraid to play at UNI.

Re: Register: Big Four Classic basketball tickets selling quickly
I wouldn't mind having ISU v. UNI/Drake and Iowa v. Drake/UNI day one then switch up Drake and UNI day two, keeping ISU/Iowa home-and-home, so that all the Iowa teams do actually play each other every year. That's one of the more disappointing aspects to me (also cost). And I really hate this "we get nothing out playing in-state rivals" crap. Playing on semi-neutral courts against semi-decent competition is a good lead in to Big 12 play, not to mention a heck of a lot more fun to watch than ISU beating up on SWAC teams.
