I'm not a big BB fan but yet I buy MBB and WBB season tickets each year to support the system and glad able to do it and go to games when feel like it or give to families when I can't Why? ISU has no responsibility to subsidize those departments. And that is exactly what giving midmajors ongoing home and homes is, no doubt about it. Quite frankly i even hate the 'big 4' label. There are 2 big and 2 little programs in this state. Fact. UNI has beaten us lately, sure, but that is as much a symptom of the fact that our program was at lows not seen since the 70s as anything else. I honestly couldnt care less if UNI's entire athletic department was closed next week. Not out of malice, but purely out of apathy for their program.
This 'big 4 classic' will last the length of the contract, and then it will not be renewed, and drake and UNI will be told Ames and Iowa City or not at all. At most i could see throwing drake a bone and allowing it to be a home and neutral (hilton one year, WFA the next) At this point the whole annual rivalry will have already ended (as we're missing both of these schools at least once already), so some of the possible outcry will be stemmed.

Re: big four classic attendance by fan base
I am a fan of ISU and that is who I support.
I have nothing against Drake and UNI and would likely be considered a casual fan.
However, ISU has no obligation, nor do I to fund these programs.

I'll take side bets that it'll never see year 4. They were less than a 1000 tickets shy of a sell out. This thing isn't going to change anytime soon.

A sellout isnt all that impressive when you have 4 teams from in state there, imho. ISU and Iowa combined wouldve notched near 30,000 attendance if the games were in Ames\IC

Couple thoughts
1) I think the schools charged too much for tickets. The ticket office said they sold out upper deck $25 tickets , I'm skeptical as there seemed to be open seats. The lower bowl might have been 80% sold- IMO $75 was a bit steep & same goes for $50 upper deck. 2) WF might have been half full for the 2nd game. Not the best atmosphere. IMO they might be better off selling 2 separate session tickets. this

I, hate to say this but I thought it seemed like it was hard for us Iowa State fans to get into the game today. It probably did not help that I was stuck in the Drake corner.

Yeah, this idea seemed to fall on it's face. Maybe if they let people buy tickets for only the game they want to watch it would draw more people.

Re: big four classic attendance by fan base
What I would prefer to see happen is Iowa and Iowa State share the day at Wells Fargo but schedule high quality opponents. I would pay 70 bucks to see a Iowa and Iowa State vs a Big 12/Big 10 opponent double header.
Iowa vs Kansas State.
Iowa State vs Illinois.
Something like that is far more interesting to me than Iowa and Iowa State playing MVC teams in Wells Fargo. Gives Iowa fans a chance to see their team plus someone else from their conference. Same for Iowa State.

Well, to each their own, but if you feel that ISU has no obligation to fund Drake or UNI, then in order to be consistent you should never go to the non-conference guaranteed money games against teams like Alabama A&M, since ISU pays those schools a good amount of money to come up and get their ***** kicked in Hilton.
I don't know, maybe you don't go to those games already? But people who turn up their nose at the thought of playing at UNI or Drake so we don't subsidize their athletic programs shouldn't go to those types of games in Hilton to be consistent.

Re: big four classic attendance by fan base
I think the idea has some merit. I realize it is supposed to be an in-state thing but I feel it has much more potential if you can lure in some bigger opponents. Here is my thought. Bring in teams from the midwest to play Iowa and Iowa State in one location. Bring in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Marquette, Mizzou, Kansas State, Creighton. Obviously Iowa would not play the Big Ten teams and ISU would not play the Big 12 teams but it could make for a great day of basketball and a great ticket. I would be more inclined to pay for a 70 dollar ticket to see Iowa State-Marquette and Iowa-Missouri. They could even return to Kansas City the next year and flip opponents to get Missouri's interest. I really think ISU could start using WFA as a way to get bigger names on the non-conference slate.

I really like this idea of Iowa playing a Big 12 opponent and ISU playing a Big 10 team, it would make for a fun day of basketball and give the local fans a reason to stick around for both games.

I was just thinking this. Was writing as you posted.

Re: big four classic attendance by fan base
I absolutely enjoyed this today.... No there is not an unlike button.
Most fans from Iowa and uni and drake were either not an issue or actually courteous. I really didn't see many Iowa fans cheering against Iowa state, but they sat in their seats like they really didn't care.
Iowa showed up in mass because for hok fans in the Des Moines or west of Des Moines, this is the closest they get to see them play without driving 1.5 hrs. Whereas ames is located in the perfect part of the state.
i hope it continues, it's a cool way to see all Iowans in one building.
The ticket is too expensive...without a doubt. But it almost sold out, so the demand will keep the price up. I won't pay that much next year though.

Except that is not subsidizing their program for these one year deals. That is paying for a service rendered (showing up to play). Giving UNI and Drake one of the highest value games of their season every other year for little in positive benefit for us? That's subsidizing. They get far more financial benefit out of the situation than we do.
