Amazing that it was 25 years ago today (December 19, 1987) that Lafester blew up against Iowa. Lost in it all was a great performance from Jeff Grayer.
That is still probably one of the best basketball games I have ever seen, let alone the individual performances. I used to have it on VHS, but I think I scrapped it on one of my moves, and it was probably no good anyway. I'd buy a DVD of it in a heartbeat.
Still one of the greatest games I've ever attended. It had it all:
Win over hated rival
Great individual performance (perhaps the best by a Cyclone ever)
Incredible crowd participation
and Johnny Orr trying to kick the crap out of an Iowa assistant (Glenn Close?) after the game.
My wife and I attended this game. It is one of our favorite Hilton memories. Glad I have a copy on DVD. May need to pull it out and watch it over the holidays. Thanks for the reminder. The post game radio show was a fun one with Johnny talking about how losing this game "just killed the Hawks" or something like that. When asked why Iowa did not do a better job stopping Lafester Jeff Grayer said "They must have been attending another game." Classic!
That was an incredible game. Non stop back and forth scoring with Lafester just going wild. I think my favorite shot of his for the night was his 3 pointer at the end of the first half. There was also a tip in where he just seemed to come flying in out of nowhere.
They say country music speaks to the heart. Unfortunately, it has to go through your ears to get there.
I was at this game and felt the intensity was none stop the entite game. Someone that was at this game and the Okie State comeback game please tell me which was louder?
What was the story about Lafester pulling up next to somebody at a stoplight and saying he was feeling good that day?
I'm pretty sure it was Pete Taylor. The way he told it Lafester was all antsy and couldn't wait for the game to start.
"There are five real good recruits in the state. We got three of them. One couldn’t get into school, and the other went to (the University of) Iowa...which is about the same thing." - Coach Johnny Orr

Gary Close. Glenn was busy cooking pet rabbits and trying to stab Michael Douglas.
Student tickets for that game were part of the Christmas Break package. Kansas was the other big game included in the package. We had 4th row tickets behind the ISU bench. The best seats I ever had as a student.

The Iowa game had a constant roar from start to finish. The free throws at the end of the OK St game you can't compare to anything.
