Royce refuses to play in D League

There has to be more to this then just the fear of flying. Royce isn't being managed well at all. If he was he'd be told the NBA owes him nothing, and the window of opportunity will soon close. This is really an unfortunate situation and it's obvious the fears Royce is experiencing requires a much more qualified sports/clinical psychologist-psychiatrist then what he is being offered or has at this time. This is certainly resolvable if Royce wants to play in the NBA bad enough. Come on Royce get your head out of your ***.

...I would assume there has been a conversation between Fred and Kevin regarding Royce and this situation. I would love to get some feedback from either regarding any ideas or suggestions that might have been discussed in this issue.

... Royce come on man do you have any idea what the F your throwing away. You could be jumping in on the Harden and Lin show right now and putting yourself in position to blow up your next NBA contract.

He could have done a lot of good for mental health. Right now, he starkly shows it is difficult to handle, much more than a physical rehab injury. I am not sure he will ever play pro with these limitations. If he needs a doctor on the sideline to tell the coach to take him out because he is getting filled with anxiety, that will not work in the pros. Rockets last practice is Thursday for rest of month as several games must be played in Jan. He feels like he is the players union vs NHL it appears.

I don't see this as being a game playing situation but rather a flying-travel issue unless I missed something. When playing he seems totally relaxed, at least he was when he was playing for ISU.

One of the only things Royce has attempted to be clear about is that this situation has nothing to do with travel. It's all about some mysterious protocol that his doctors recommend and the Rockets refuse. The Rockets have bent over backwards on the travel issues.

The reason people mention playing time is that none of it blew up until the Rockets assigned him to Rio Grande for a stretch along with their other rookies. McHale went back to Minnesota to be with his daughter as she lay ill and dying, and this whole thing exploded.

It's not a travel issue. They solved that one.

That would not work for his protocol. Bball in Israel or Slovakia would cause a lot of anxiety.

Well, for #anxiety euro troopers, the truth is: Meals are minimal, bus sucks, fans speak foreign language, coach just stares, stats are unreadable.

He needed to go. He is such a unique player with his skillset that mental issues aside his game might not have held up the following year under close scrutiny when the expectations of his 3 point %, Assist to TO ratio, FT % etc would all be high. He'd also risk being "old" by NBA standards a year later in the draft. Age is the biggest reason why Wes Johnson didn't play another year in Syracuse since he'd be 23/24 by the next years draft.

Tony Mitchell is a guy who is somewhat similar to Royce and isn't helping his draft status at North Texas and his team has shown zero heart and are getting smoked by bad teams. Royce could be having a similar year indivudually since he isn't a selfish player and would defer to the hot hand most nights. His body and versatile game made him a lock for the first round despite the issues since he made a name for himself in March he had to go. Basketball wise he's a great fit for the Rockets and could be a big part of their second unit. But that is a young team and right now they are not going to reward a malcontent because of the message it sends to the guys who have been there working hard.

Royce White is a weird dude its really sad that he doesn't want to play basketball and seems like he just wants to launch a high profile lawsuit at the team who drafted him. He could play his way out of the D league in 2 weeks and get himself minutes in Houston if he wanted.

As people said this isn't even about travel the Rockets are letting him bus to some games and whenever he flies I am sure he gets a row of seats to himself and can take all the xanax he wants. He is throwing a temper tantrum to be guaranteed minutes since being at the end of the bench or in the D league is below him and he feels he doesn't need to earn PT. And he has known for well over a month he has zero chance of getting his way and is still pushing this crap.


Toronto should get him at some point since none of their players want to be there and they can give him 20+ mins a game and let him be the star in a year or two. I bet after all of this crap RW has put the Rockets through he will be easier for the next team that gets him if they kiss his butt on the doctor thing.

Are you seriously saying that flying and travel isn't the primary issue with Royce with his situation now. Allot of posters are comparing his success at ISU and what Fred did to his situation with the NBA. That's like comparing apples and oranges. 30-35 games in college with 1 game a week with 82 regular season NBA games + playoffs and 3 sometimes 4 games a week and flights all over the US.

I can't back RW on this; from an outsider's perspective it looks like he's being totally unreasonable. I hope he can eventually sort it out and have a quality NBA career, but at this point I wonder if that window has already closed. Sad story if that ends up being the case.

What I am guessing is, if he is having a bad hair day, his doc will tell him he can take a break from practice or games. I would have thought he should now be talking about practicing his jump shooting. Wonder what his gal friend is telling him? He just has to play three years to have a nice nest egg for the family. At this rate, he may not make it out of year one. Cato made his big money or $20M on his contract after first 3-5 years.
