Random thoughts on this year's Men's Bball team
--After finding out earlier in the season that SDW was going to redshirt I was shocked. Looked like a stud on his highlight films, played some good competition, and was a top 150 recruit. I realize he needs to bulk up, and I trust CFH's decision, anyone know how he is progressing? And what can we expect from him down the road?
--Has Percy Gibson ever dunked the ball? It seems to be a consensus that he needs to work on his post game (develop a right hand), but I believe the guy needs to just play with some more intensity. Almost all of his shots he just flips it up there with his left hand, relying on his touch. Just out of curiosity, what coach works with the bigs? One thing that McDermott did well was developing our post players. I've yet to see any improvement from our bigs as far as offensive post moves.

I'll try to answer your question about SDW. I think he needed to be RS because he was just too skinny and needed to add some strength.
But I think he will make a big contribution next season for us. I thought he looked really skilled, fast with the ball, and a very smooth player. If he has a good shot, he will play quite a bit next year IMO.

In my opinion Sherron will be very solid for us next year. Not many people are talking about him but he was a top 150 player for a reason.
Percy Gibson had a dunk against Cincinnati this year.

SDW was competing for PT with 4 senior guards. Long had a better chance to play because he is more of a pg. I think he plays quite a bit next year.
Gibson's game may not be as developed as some would like, but for a true soph post player, he actually has a good post game. What needs improvement is his defense and S&C.

re: Random thoughts on this year's Men's Bball team
I think SDW simply needed to bulk up. Also, although they aren't playing a lot Long and Okoro serve important backup roles in the case of an injury. Long as point guard and Okoro as a lock down defender, which is why I believe SDW was red shirted but they were not.
Percy can flat out score (Hoiberg's words I believe). Offensively he doesn't have much of a right hand that would potentially make him go from an effective scorer to flat out dominant over time. Defense is where he has his most work to do, as almost every player on this team.

SDW wouldn't have gotten much playing time with the guys in front of him. It tells me that Fred thinks he can contribute in the future and didn't want to waste a year of his play in garbage time. As far as Percy, gainst Withey, I think he rushed it instead of getting his body into him. Good learning experience.

Re: Random thoughts on this year's Men's Bball team
On the Fred Hoiberg show CFH had great things to say about Sherron. Said us Cyclone fans will love him. He has a bright future at Iowa State. He said he can really score it. The scoring might be much needed next year after losing a lot of our scoring. I know he will only be a freshman though. Last thing Fred said was SDW would have been in the rotation this year but wouldn't have got great minutes (probably 5-10 minutes) so they decided to RS him because his future is so bright.

You don't red shirt players like him because he is never going to be a solid contributor where as SDW will be.

Just because he isn't a star as a freshman doesn't mean he won't contribute.

Re: Random thoughts on this year's Men's Bball team
The ultimate Percy moment was last game when he had to move eight feet away from the bucket to get a rebound and he promptly retraced his steps to shoot and score. Most people would have passed at that point.
In the Kansas game, he also tried to go up with the ball against Withey who then blocked him.
Fun to watch.
Vintage Percy.
Looking forward to CFH magic for the next bball season, Georges style. -
Re: Random thoughts on this year's Men's Bball team
I think Gibson is pretty solid in the post given his athletic ability. He either gets shots up quick or he takes it right at guys so shot blockers have no room.
I agree with the person who says work on conditioning.

Re: Random thoughts on this year's Men's Bball team
My random thoughts is this is our best rebounding team since Big 12 banners were being hung. Haven't looked at the stats to back it up, just that it seems we grab every rebound, even @KU where we really had no business outrebounding them athletically and physically.

I bet it was an awkward meeting then when Hoiberg told Okoro he wasn't good and that's why he didn't get the luxury of a red shirt.
