Free McGee?
Tyrus McGee will be remembered as a favorite Clone by many fans for many years (imho).
Hustle, energy, great shooting and commitment to team. Never seems frustrated about being the bench player and provides a spark so many times.
Given this, many fans ask, why not start him (given the slow starts which seem to be a feature of this team!)?
Have to trust in our coaching staff on this decision, as they probably see things in game and practice we do not see.
However, it still seems like a question mark as to why not try it for one game to see if the early bounce holds even better.
Personally, we would like to see him start at least one game before the season ends.. In nothing else. just in recognition of his efforts.
Please discuss. -

He isn't the 6th man because he isn't starter material...

Re: Free McGee?
Did you see his defense yesterday? McGee is fine right where he is, the best 6th man in the Big XII.

Re: Free McGee?
Hoiberg appears, like many on this board, to think that starting McGee would lose the spark off the bench that he gives. Also who would he start in place of. The obvious choices would be either Babb or Clyburn. IMO Babb is the lock down defender that is needed as a starter and Clyburn is too much of an offensive threat to not be starting.

Re: Free McGee?
There's been how many threads calling for McGee to start... I'm sure he'll start senior day, but the energy off the bench is what we need. If we came out flat without some instant offense available on the bench, then were screwed.

Yeah, exactly--what's wrong with the way he's currently used?

Re: Free McGee?
Again, this is discussion and presented as such, calm down everyone.
The original post defers to the coaches and just raises the discussion topic.

Re: Free McGee?
He only got 18 minutes against Purple. Needs to be in the 25 range IMO

IMO, he is a high energy guy and good three point shooter but he isn't the best offensively. He often takes bad shots and yesterday he got a charge called on him driving uncontrolled when Bubu was wide open for three.

Re: Free McGee?
John Havelicek played for the Boston Celtics for 16 seasons and helped them win 8 NBA championships. He created the sixth man position, and is still seen as one of the greatest of all time. He started a total of 10 games in his NBA career........10 All-Star games. Never cracked the Celtics starting lineup.
Why mess with something that works? McGee provides a spark (often needed by this team) off the bench. He knows his role, accepts his role, and performs it as well if not better than anyone else in the country. Why would anyone want to screw with that?

Re: Free McGee?
I'm only 19 so I don't remember this but my dad said that Eric Heft held the 6th man role for several years as a Cyclone.

Re: Free McGee?
He got 18 because of foul trouble ( and one a bs call at that). I would like to see more double screens set for him.

Re: Free McGee?
All fair points, and as stated, I defer to the coaches, just a good discussion wuestion.

Tyrus made two huge mistakes yesterday that could have been critical....his 4th foul was just plain stupid and fouling on the 3 was also stupid.
I love Tyrus. I think he is a great player. I think about 20-25 minutes is perfect for him, but yesterday was not the day for it.

I love Tyrus. I think he is a great player. I think about 20-25 minutes is perfect for him, but yesterday was not the day for it. I as thinking with about 2 minutes left in the game yesterday that Hoiberg needed to get Tyrus in the game. Than I looked over who was in the game, and realized there was no one for him to come in for. McGee is best suited at the sixth man role, and when the starers are all playing to their capabilities, there is no room for him on the court which was the case lte in the game yesterday. Tyrus is a spark, and can get he team fired up with his outstanding shooting ability, but he needs to come off the bench.
