Tough call. Both Weber and Martin are good coaches. Going to go with Frank Martin. It will take a few years but he will make that South Carolina team competitive.
I've heard Frank Martin on the radio before (maybe Cowherd?) and it wasn't what I expected. He looks like Scarface on the court but he was very well spoken on the radio. He was talking about how he has zero tolerance for his players cursing and he did once, turned around, and his daughter was staring at him from the row behind the coaches. He said he had to apologize to his players the next day in practice for not "practicing what he was preaching".
He is already doing it. Last year they won 2 SEC conference games. They are already 2-4 this season. They won 10 games total last year. Already at 12 wins this year. The growth will be much faster since the SEC sucks sans 3-4 teams in basketball. I honestly could see a NIT bid for them this year.
Their 4 conference losses have been close.
@ Mississippi State by 2
Auburn by 3
Vandy by 7
@ Mizzou by 6
Still have 2 games against Georgia, 2 home games against LSU and Tenn, they also have Mississippi State at home. I would consider those games extremely winnable seeing as how those teams are bad.
They also have Mizzou and Ole Miss, both ranked, at home. Martin owned Mizzou last year and his system kills what Mizzou likes to do.
Best case scenario, they win all those games above and go 1-1 against the ranked teams. That gives them 6 more wins to finish at 8-10 in the SEC.
tl;dr I really like Martin as a coach.
I was shocked how good of a guy Frank was when I met him last year. Guy is tough, but he certainly has good personality and I can see why top ranked recruits want to play for him.
although the overwhelming sentiment is that frank martin the better coach, an argument can certainly be made that weber is better.
top 2 finishes within the conference as head coach: weber 6 of 14 seasons. martin 0-6
wining % as head coach: weber .671. martin .473
for those who say weber can only recruit with other coach's recruits, what about sourthern illinois? he took so. ill. from 3 straight losing seasons to 5 straight winning seasons, winning the conference in years 4 and 5 with his own recruits.
at illinois in year 6, they took second place (T) in the conference with his own recruits.
even if what people say is true and he can only win with other coaches players it doesn't mean he is a bad coach. he just needs an assistant who is a great recruiter. look no further than otz. for us (not saying fred is a bad recruiter). even when we were bad with mcdermont, otz was the leading man bringing in a fair amount of high profile recruits.
I'd much rather have a beer with Frank. Weber is a dork.
Frank Martin always appeared on 810 WHB and was always well spoken.
I went with Weber for now. Both are good coaches, but Weber has succeeded everywhere he has been. So has Martin, but he has only really been at K-State. Plus, Weber does have one Final Four and a couple other Sweet 16s to his credit.
Martin and it's not Even close.
Weber won with Bill Selfs recruits... and that's it.
well actually he got the job at Illinois with Self recruits who were absolutely sick on the court....then saw a rapid underachievement under him for the program with a lot of the same level of recruits. Illinois is a hot bed for top recruits with Simeon and Whitney Young alone. 3 top 100 recruits alone in 2014 I think. Weber got recruits hes just soft. He had plenty of recruits but he just didn't have to do much with deron Williams, luther head and Augustine that year. Martin wasn't even the guy who recruited his guys....he just hired a guy who recruited them and he coached the **** out of them, was tough on them and made them play their ***** off. They played harder than ever out of fear. Ill take Martin as the better coach and its not even close.
