Weekdays/Weekends
Looking at the past 2 years of conference play...
ISU is 11-1 when playing on the weekend, with the one loss coming in Lawrence last season. ISU is 5-1 in those games on the road and 6-0 in those games at home.
ISU is 5-9 when playing during the week. ISU is 0-8 in those games on the road/neutral location, and 5-1 in those games at home. Of the 5 home wins during the week, if you take away the Texas Tech game last year where ISU won by 18, ISU has won the remaining games by an average of 3.25 points. 3 of the 5 home wins have come on last second shots.
I started to notice this about a week ago and looked back, but it really seems like ISU struggles while playing during the week, and plays pretty darn good on the weekend.

Re: Weekdays/Weekends
That's a good analysis. I've heard people make similar comments over the past few months. Fred needs to figure out a way to motivate his team (or change the culture) during the week.

Re: Weekdays/Weekends
The last two years Fred's teams have played to the stage. Playing on the weekend typically means bigger crowds, bigger stage, more energy. I don't really have a problem with it. As Fred begins to acquire more talent his teams will be able to get over the hump a little easier during the week. With that being said ISU has really been hurt the last few years by having to travel to Texas twice in just a couple of days.

Re: Weekdays/Weekends
I think one reason for this is all of the Monday and Tuesday games last year which resulted in a short game plan and prep time for the weekday game followed by a long prep time for the weekend game. I think game plan and prep time is more valuable for this coaching staff compared to some others simply because I think they're a really good gameplanning staff.

Re: Weekdays/Weekends
I think I'm just going to stop watching Wednesday night road games.

Well, they need to gas up the Fred bus, put some decent seats in, show some cartoons/movies, bring in the cheerleaders and powerade, and just get with the program on Wednesdays. What are they doing? Studying instead of partying on these trips? Looking forward to CFH magic for the next bball season, Georges style. -
Re: Weekdays/Weekends
I actually first noticed this last year and it so far has continued this season...so, I ran some numbers on the weekend road games in conference vs weekday road games in conference dating back to 1963.
Can you remember the last road win during the week in conference play? Road Woes: Days of the Week |
In the end, I do chalk this up more to an anomaly than anything else. In part because last year's road losses were during the week but they were also to the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 6th, and 7th place teams in the league.

Re: Weekdays/Weekends
Tight home games on weekdays might be connected to the crowd too. My son got to Hilton 25 minutes before the game and got third row in the alley. Weekend game he would have been in the upper deck. Had to be fewer students at some of the weekday games.

Re: Weekdays/Weekends
I think it could be an overall mental thing as well. I know I am a hell of a lot more loose come the weekends. Even as a fan, games on the weekend seem to always be a lot more fun.

Fred gasses up on weekends.

Re: Weekdays/Weekends
so it looks like we'll lose @TX and @Bay and finish 13-5, probably good for second place.

Re: Weekdays/Weekends
What amazed me the most from your piece, Kirk, was to learn that Johnny actually won 17 conference games on the road. I have a hard time remembering him winning a single one.
I love Johnny, but you could say his teams struggled on the road.

You could spin it and say he won on the road against every Big Eight team.
