I'm blaming McDoormat for that one
Re: Okoro and Dorsey-Walker?
Does anyone think Bubu is giving up the ball awful early? It seems to me he isn't even close to the 3pt line and he has already passed it. He has attacked the glass a little and drawn some fouls, but I think part of the low turnover numbers right now is he gets rid of the ball early. He hasn't put alot of pressure on the guy guarding him yet. Maybe I am crazy but Lucious forces the defender to play defense, which often leads to turnovers.

I think Bubu is still getting into the flow. I think last night will help a lot going forward. He was more aggressive because there wasn't anything on the line and he did well. Hopefully that translates forward.

You mean like Bubu? You do know this is only Fred's third year and only the second year for his first class. You act like you have been waiting a long time, when it is not even possible yet.
What is your fixation on three and four years anyways? Who gives a ****, besides those on opposing team message boards that are clearly fearful and jealous of what Fred is buliding. Does our RPI go up if the team has three and four year players? The most talented teams do not have too many guys that see minutes for three or four years.

Travis Hines of the Ames Tribune said in one of his November podcasts that the staff sees Long as an off-guard. His ability as a pg is average, but his pg skills for a shooting or 3rd guard are good and will really help out whoever plays pg next year. Similar to when we had pseudo pgs in Horton and Nurse playing off-guard. With his versatility he could be a great fit for a 3 guard system as he has decent size, strength, handle, shooting, and is a team first guy.

You say it like it is a bad thing. Taking the air out of the ball or being careless is not what we need from a back-up pg.

I am really looking forward to having that strong stable of guards who can all handle it and take it up the court. It will make us that much more dangerous running the floor. HOIBALL BABY!
Re: Okoro and Dorsey-Walker?
I didn't read past the first page, but what I'm gathering from the thread starter is since Sledge didn't work out Fred can't recruit guards? Or is it because Naz isn't playing like a five star one and done?
Re: Okoro and Dorsey-Walker?
Does the op even follow the team?

Yes I have been a Cyclone fan for over 30 years. I was unable to keep close tabs on the team at the start of the season because I was out of the country on work and did not have much time to devote to reading the message board. Thought this was a place to ask questions and get answers. Did not know that you have to have 2000+ posts to be a Cyclone fan.

Sledge, Naz, Okoro, SDW. That is four guards (one that transfered) none of which are getting any playing time. I didn't say Fred can't recruit guards, I was just pointing out that none that he is brought in from the high school ranks are contributing much and this during a season when the team had very little depth at the guard position. I did not say guys have to be one and done, just would be nice to see some of the freshman guards contributing. It has been good to read that SDW is doing well in his redshirt year and that Naz Long has been improving this year though. That is all I was asking. Geez, get your panties out of a bunch, RustShack.

with all due respect, I think were your drew ire was with the way you phrased your original post. You've been out of the country. Haven't been able to follow. You have questions. Okay. No one can fault you for that. And you asked your question, referring to Okoro and SDW, "What has happened to those guys?"
Fair question for someone who hasn't been in the loop.
But, you immediately follow it up with "I love Coach Hoiberg, but I worry a bit about his evaluating guard talent." There's a pretty big jump from not knowing what happened to two guys to the assumption that there's something wrong with Fred's ability to evaluate talent. If you didn't know why they weren't playing, why would you immediately jump to a problem with Fred? I think people have reacted so strongly because it appears that you are forming an opinion based without actually what is going on.
Re: Okoro and Dorsey-Walker?
How could anyone not be impressed with Naz Long? I thought he looked very good in the nonconference games and I'm a little surprised he hasn't seen more playing time in conference action, especially when Bubu was suspended. There's just too many good players with too much experience ahead of him, I guess. Also, Fred, apparently, is an advocate of shortening up the bench when conference play starts. He's said as much himself.
Under Johnny Orr, I always thought we played better when we didn't have a deep bench. Too many options can sometimes be a bad thing, I guess. The theory must be you need to let your main players get in a rhythm, and a regular substitution pattern helps with that.

Heh? Lucious, Babb, Clyburn, Mcgee, Palo. 5 guys for 3 spots isn't "very little depth".

But it is a fact that in the past two years he has brought in 4 high school guards and not a single one of them has got any playing time, right? Based on that fact, I formed my opinion. I have since read things to make me change my mind a bit. I don't get why people assume I am a troll though if I ask a question or state an opinion. Sorry I can't post the message board 24/7 like some others. He has done GREAT with juco and transfer guards and clearly that has been enough to do very well the past couple of years.
