Re: Hoiberg vs. Orr
People seem to act like this is what Iowa State basketball is going to look like for the rest of the time that Fred is here as coach.
People seem to forget the absolute stopgap recruiting with the transfers that he had to do just to field teams. He had three scholarship players (and Bubu) when he got here. This is just the beginning of his recruiting efforts, and the fact that we have signed and received commits from 4 top 100 players in this short time that he has been here is amazing.
Yes we have missed out on most of our front court targets, but we were in on some good ones there as well.
Johnny is a legend in the game, and deserved all of the accolades that he got as a coach. He came to the prairie as one of the great coaches in the game, and built a program where there was none.
Fred was kind of in the same boat after chewey decimated the program. The fact that we have found enough good "castoffs" to be looking at going to the NCAA for the second time in his three years shows that the guy can make the adjustments to the talent that he gets here.
I know people are frustrated with the road losses, but the fact that we are two banked threes from being in first should tell people that we are at least a pretty good team. I know that the world of the fan sites, perspective is not a coveted trait, but Lord people see that what is happening is pretty good. Especially when you consider the waste land that Iowa State basketball was just three short years ago.

Re: Hoiberg vs. Orr
Without Johnny, Fred would have a much harder path, so hard to judge. I am sure however that:
1. Mayor has better hair; and
2. Johnny gives a livelier interview.

Re: Hoiberg vs. Orr
Lets just all be thankful that Greg is not here. Johnny, Tim, Larry, and Fred are all great coaches. We were pretty lucky to have all 4 of those guys over the last two decades.

If I recall correctly, Johnny won about three times as many conference road games in 14 years at the helm at ISU.

Johnny won 2 conference road games in his first 3 seasons.
It took him until season 5 to get his 5th conference road win.

Johnny built Hilton Magic. Can't think of anyone I would want more than Hoiberg to continue that and build his own reputation.

Re: Hoiberg vs. Orr
Orr coached in a much different ISU than Fred. I grew up during the Orr years, and loved Johnny but his success gets over hyped by ISU fans, IMO because he was so beloved and charismatic. Johnny laid the foundation for what ISU bball would become in the last 90's and early 2000's but never quite got things over the hump. This season would have been looked at as a great year during the Orr years, but thanks to Johnny laying that foundation (as well as Floyd and Larry taking to the next level) ISU fans expect more.
Fred has the luxury of not having as large a hump to overcome, he owes a lot of that to Johnny but his record as a player, executive and now coach has been just as crucial. I think Fred will take the program further than Johnny did because he got a head start. People criticizing our play on the road forget that when you look at our roster, its not full of guys who were highly regarded recruits. Our guys are no slouches but if you look at how we stack up against the other schools in the conference from a recruiting standpoint, we are overachieving. Fred has taken a patchwork team and molded it into a conference contender. I could see some growing pains next season, but Fred has the program heading towards contending year and year out. During the Orr years, just being in the hunt for a tourney bid was a big deal, Fred has already made that an expectation.
The only bigger turnoff than finding out a woman smokes, is finding out she's a Husker fan. -

Re: Hoiberg vs. Orr
With 3 more wins this year Fred will have 2 winning conference records in 3 years. Johnny had 2 in 14 years. Just think of the statue we're going to have to put up for Fred if he keeps this up.

The only thing I wish CFH would do, is use the "press" more like Orr did.
Worked like a charm.

Re: Hoiberg vs. Orr
All I know is that both Johnny and Fred are better than Greg McDermott and Wayne Morgan. Both are likely better than Larry Eustachy as well. Larry was running a JuCo camp with an alcohol problem at the end, both are trains headed for nowhere. The level of coaching Fred is demonstrating is off the charts compared to what he should be in his 1st 3 years. There are many coaches across the country that are regarded as good coaches that 1. Couldn't have remotely been as successful with that 1st year team. 2. Would have trouble molding the transfers into a cohesive unit 2 years running. All of this is happening in his 1st 3 years of EVER coaching. I believe he is actually better than Johnny now and definitely will be in the future. I also believe Tim Floyd would have had at least 1 NCAA championship here if he would have stayed.
I also think Fred has better resources than the rest of the coaches have had. The practice facility alone is an immense improvement.
