USM has 3 notable advantages: higher RPI (40 vs 53), better non-conference SOS (111 vs 175) and lack of a nagging sub-200 loss.
Nearly everything else on ISU’s resume is better: top-50 record (2-5 vs. 0-4); average RPI of top-50 losses (23 vs 30), record in 51-100 (4-1 vs. 0-2) and overall SOS (67 vs 104). I find it reprehensible that they use these two metrics in their evaluation.
What are the components of these metrics?
Non-conference SOS = non conference games (obviously)
Overall SOS = non conference games + conference games
Why is it appropriate that the non conference games are counted twice in the evaluation while the conference games are counted once?
If they want to have a separate non-conference SOS the other metric should be simply conference SOS. Some teams have the meat of their schedule in the non-conference, others have it in the conference. Why is one inherently better than the other? If it isn't, then it should be evaluate fairly.

Wrong Joe Lunardi has ISU as a 10 seed today firmly in he is by far the most credible Bracket guy. he will be the guy who will almost never be wrong. Guy is the man of picking who's getting in. Guys like jerry palm and seth davis and cbs sports are all getting pockets stuffed by the big ten. So don;t waste your time with anyone else duh!!! everyone knows that ameshammer...

I will say this: If UVa is a play-in team, Iowa State is somewhere around a 10 seed. If ISU is on 12 line, Virginia's out.

Which of the following has a stronger resume? Team A Record 15-8, 6-4 RPI 65 SOS 77 vs top 50 RPI 3-6 vs 51-100 1-1 vs 101-200 2-1
vs 201-plus 7-0 Team B Record 16-8, 8-3 RPI 60 SOS 59 vs top 50 RPI 1-3 vs 51-100 5-1 vs 101-200 6-3 vs 201-plus 3-1

It isn't a complete picture of the data, but is a way to compare.
Interesting thing to me is (spoiler alert for those of you playing at home!) ...
Team B is Alabama, which has been in bracket projections on and off most of the season and is just outside of Next Four Out in Bracket Matrix.
Team A, which has gotten almost no attention, is Air Force.

At what point do you look at it like a sane person and say any loses is bad lose, you still lose. .....
But I'm a sports guy and know that when it comes to brackets sanity goes.

Re: Mock NCAA selection
Lunardi has a better feel for how the committee will select teams. The media has their own bias. Athletic directors and committee members leave the room when their teams are being discussed.
