The thing with both Matty and Man Man is that they seem to have game, but also the nose to pick their spots and win games. You can't teach that.

Custer, Thomas, and Morris could make for one heckuva backcourt from 2014-2017...with Niang and Vaughn in the front court....that's a lot of firepower. Sounds like a final four kinda squad!

really depends on the state I think. A Mr. Basketball in Michigan carries a lot more weight than Iowa (except for the rare talent such as Fred or Harrison).

Although, wasn't Dominique Buckley a final 4 pick for it a few years ago? it might not carry a ton of weight after all.

McD had several mr bballs, and runner ups while at isu, almost all of them were crap, at least at the bcs level.

I think context is a key. Guys Fred recruits have major conference talent, and plenty of it. I don't think we can hold Mr. Basketball winners that didn't pan out with other coaches as a measure against Monte.

Monte is a Georges type. He know how to play the game of basketball. He may not be a top notch athlete (not a bad athlete however by any means) which is why he's getting screwed by ESPN in the rankings but has "it" in him which is why he won Mr. Basketball in Michigan and why he will be great in a cyclone uniform.
I was talking about Naz as some seem really down on him even though he's only a freshman

Dig up an athletic big to patrol the paint and block shots, and I'm sold on your vision.

Regardless of stars, though, I've been excited about this kid for months. I'll miss McGee, Babb and the other seniors, but I can't remember that last recruiting class pre-Hoiberg I looked forward to seeing as much as this one.
The only class that comes close for me was Stinson and Blalock. They came in and took over right away.

I can see Morris coming in and taking over the point like Blalock or Tinsley, though maybe not as flashy, but still effective. I think Matt Thomas could turn into a shooter on the level of Hoiberg.

I'm pretty sure Scott Thug Life Christopherson won Mr. Basketball WI as a senior. Of course he transferred here from Marquette...

Interesting that Fred didn't come in as a great long range shooter. His freshman year he shot a dismal 26% from 3. He was very effective from 2 and from the line which made him so valuable. The hard worker that we all know Fred is worked to give himself a more reliable 3 point shot. By the time he graduated he brought that dismal freshman percentage up to a very good career 40%. What he did in his time in the NBA just shows what persistent hard work can do - capped by leading the league in 3 point percentage his last year in the league.
"There are five real good recruits in the state. We got three of them. One couldn’t get into school, and the other went to (the University of) Iowa...which is about the same thing." - Coach Johnny Orr
