They didn't, because no one in Indiana cares about Irish basketball. It's Irish football and Hoosier basketball.

Out of the 68-team bracket, only 17 schools had zero counties support them. Just five of these teams were 12-seeds or better: California (12), Belmont (11), Temple (9), Notre Dame (7), and Saint Louis (4). The Fighting Irish and the Owls get a pass, since I would have been shocked to see any county in Indiana go against the Hooisers, and Villanova is clearly the fan favorite of the greater Philadelphia area. Belmont and Saint Louis are mid-majors. That leaves Cal as the most baffling: the prestigious public university didn’t manage to snag even one of the eight counties that make up the Bay Area. One went to also-local Saint Mary’s, six went to Kansas, Duke, or UNC, and San Francisco, for some reason, went to Michigan."

I have a feeling Indiana is a lot like Nebraska. Fans of one school in the fall, fans of another school in the winter, especially now that Indiana has pulled themselves out of their basketball doldrums.

I don't see why Notre Dame would get a county in any sport apart from those in heavily catholic and heavily populated areas. Chicago (Cook County) is probably the only county in the nation I'd expect ND to get.

I live in Missouri and it is disgusting seeing all the people with Jayhawk crap on. If you're not from Kansas or didn't go there or have a relative that did then you are just another Tavern Hawk.

I like seeing Missouri as Big 12 Country on the conference map, though. Mizzou is just in an absolute wasteland right now. I can't imagine their regret over the SEC decision that is only going to get worse with time.

Maybe you haven't heard of this major public university in Illinois called, University of Illinois. They carry Chicago.

I remember when they went to the championship game back in '05 I was amazed at how many UoI supporters there were.

Edit: If we were talking football I might be inclined to agree with you, but UofI is massive here. Also ND fans are just generally more arrogant so you think there are more of them than their are. Also poeple watch ND, but usually it is more out of hate than love. JMHO

I lived on the South Side and definitely think more people are Notre Dame fans than UofI fans.

I'm always very wary of this type of data mining because not only is it self selecting, it is imperfect self selection. For example - even diehard fans might like Iowa State Athletics on facebook but not separately like Iowa State basketball. Or they could follow on Twitter instead. And so on.

So really this doesn't tell us anything at all about the various fanbases.

Honestly, I don't think there are many ND basketball fans period. ND football, another story.
