Yeah but they teach you the fight song at Orientation, they certianly don't teach you "Don't know the words" there

First the coaches, and now again the students.

As band members, we've been told to try to encourage people to not use profanity in Go, Cyclones Go! especially because we don't want to get rid of it.
That being said, it isn't going to kill anybody to not use vulgarity during that song.. I dunno. I understand what they're getting at, and I don't think the world would end if people didn't use it.
Also, as far as the 5 claps and then "You Suck".. I never actually realized that anybody said that. But then again, I'm in the band, and we say our own stuff, which is FAR more hilarious than "you suck", and plus they're usually pretty clean, else we get cut off from our director.
So a tip for the 5 claps, either say "Go State", or listen for what the band says. We say something different every game depending on who the opponent is.
Edit: I decided I should give a couple examples. If we're playing a team that has a 'cat' as a mascot, we might yell,
"Here kitty, kitty, kittyyyy!"
Or, a really funny one, when we played the Highlanders last year, we yelled
"There can only be ONE!"
As the father of young boys, I agree with them
I'll be shocked if the first place a kid figured out the f-word was in Hilton.
Heaven forbid Pollard and Co. try to make Hilton an environment that is friendly for all Cyclone fans - young and old. Fans can be clever and rowdy without being vulgar.
Like I said before the hoops season started, ya'll need to learn the words to and sing "Three Blind Refs" and other things like that.
Agree completely!!
I was attending games at Hilton during the transition to saying "you suck" after the 5 claps. Saying anything after the 5 claps is completely useless, and severely lessens the effect of the 5 sarcastic claps. Nothing needs to be said, particulalry something as stupid as "you suck".
There is no reason to be yelling profanity either. Earlier this year, during one of the CloneZone games, there was some pre-tip chat going on between the commentators, and the profanity during "Don't know the Words" came through loud and clear, and I'm sure went out over the TV broadcast as well. Totally classless.
I'm glad ADJP and JJ are putting their foot down regarding these issues. For years, students got by without yelling profanity in unison during one of the school songs. I'm sure they can do it again.
It used to be an insult to be equated to Mizzou fans...
The students could care less. What happens if we continue with the lyrics? The songs get dropped? Many students still wouldn't care. It's hard to enforce something if you have no consequence.
I fail to see why the band should stop playing a song solely because the students started screaming obscenities as alternate lyrics. Maybe the ones swearing should be taken to task. Having the band not play the song essentially lets the students completely off the hook.
Start tossing people out of Cyclone Alley if need be.
You simply cannot get away with the same chants in Hilton that you can in JTS. A smaller, enclosed space magnifies what's being said.
I like how both e-mails follow the sandwich pattern of "good news--bad news--good news." They both say 1) you're awesome and we need you, 2) you're embarrassing and need to grow up, and 3) you're awesome and we need you.
I will agree with those who previously said that not using profanity makes you seem smarter. That is one reason I loathe Hawk fans so much; you can't have a conversation with them without hearing them spew a mouthful of filth at you about being a Cyclone. Remember what Ron Burgundy says: Stay classy, Cyclone fans.
The five-clap greeting is soooo much better if there is nothing said after the claps. It gives that sort of "we don't care about you" ennui that is priceless.
Saying, "You Suck!" only validates that we care.
Go back to the old-school version, please.
