Pollard's and Jeff Johnson's email to Cyclone alley
Dear Cyclone Alley Members:
Welcome back! I can’t even begin to express how much we missed your presence in Hilton Coliseum during the basketball games over the holiday break. Hilton Magic simply is not the same when the students are not in session.
Wednesday night we open our Big 12 home schedule against the Missouri Tigers. Missouri is coming off an exciting win against the University of Texas so we are going to need each and every one of you there helping us cheer the Cyclones to victory. We have an opportunity during the next two home games to help our basketball team have a great start to the Big 12 season - but we are going to need your help to do it.
In addition, on Wednesday night, we will also be retiring the jersey of Barry Stevens, one of the greatest Cyclone men’s basketball players ever to play in Hilton Coliseum. To many Cyclone fans, “Hilton Magic” began 25 years ago on Feb. 8, 1983. On that day, as a sophomore, Stevens led an upstart Cyclone team to a stunning 73-72 overtime upset over the 10th-ranked Tigers. Stevens tallied a then-career-high 40 points and hit the final and deciding shot at the buzzer on his patented jumper at the top of the key.
I also want to take this opportunity to encourage you to consider how you represent Cyclone Alley and the University - especially to our younger fans. I am disappointed that our fans, especially children, have to hear our student section’s response to the opposing players during starting line-ups and the obscene lyrics to “Go Cyclones Go” and the “Hey” song.
Hilton Magic was founded on the excitement of the game and the enthusiasm of the crowd. Having to use obscene lyrics to create excitement is not what Hilton Magic should represent. Simply put, we are better than that. In honor of Hilton Magic, I hope we do our best to support our teams with positive cheers and chants.
Thanks for taking this message to heart. It means a lot to our team. Go, Cyclones!
Jamie Pollard
Director of Athletics
Iowa State University
Dear Cyclone Alley:
Welcome back, and I hope your holiday break gave you time to relax and travel. I also, selfishly, am glad you are back. We need the spirit of Cyclone Alley back in Hilton! As you are well aware, the purpose of Cyclone Alley is to increase spirit and to heighten Hilton Magic at Iowa State basketball games. This student section has become an important part of the Hilton game day atmosphere. Therefore, on behalf of the entire alumni family of Iowa State I thank you for your dedication and attendance at games.
As members of Cyclone Alley, you also have the unique ability to be, in many ways, some of the most important representatives of this university and its student body to the community and nation as a whole. Few things better illustrate the pride and excitement of our student body than the excitement and enthusiasm you display during games. Cheers of “Cyclone Power!” and “Let’s go, State!” are what the Cyclone Nation loves to hear! However, I would encourage you all to make sure a chant of “Go State!” follows the five claps for each of the visiting team’s starters. Other chants that have been heard recently as recycled from last year are not appropriate, completely lack class and do not support the awesome reputation you have built for Cyclone Alley or Iowa State. They are not supported by me, the community, or the athletics department.
I encourage all of you to increase Hilton Magic by increasing the volume of your Cyclone cheers, wearing your Alley t-shirts, and making Hilton so tough to play in that opponents know that there is really a "classy" team behind the team. All of this can be done without shouting or displaying acts of insults toward the visiting teams.
Thanks you for all that you do for Iowa State and Iowa State athletics. I look forward to cheering with you on Wednesday against Missouri...if you will allow me to join you in the Alley!
Go, Cyclones!

Re: Pollard's and Jeff Johnson's email to Cyclone alley
It's like they want to take away what it is to be in the student section
First they clear the pot heads and drunks off my dorm floor, now they're cleaning up the student section!
Whats next, they're going to expect us to go to class???
Jokes aside yes we can represent Iowa State a bit better but it's not like this is something new... heck the swearing and heckling have decreased a lot in the last few years...
Oh we will fight, fight, fight for Iowa State, and may her colors ever fly!!! In Accordance with Prophecy -

This is hilarious that they are instituting this against a team like Missouri, which is the renowned home of the Antlers, the root of many similar antics that will continue. Those Tiger fans can be viscious.

Re: Pollard's and Jeff Johnson's email to Cyclone alley
What do you guys say exactly during those songs.....?
-
Re: Pollard's and Jeff Johnson's email to Cyclone alley
Way to have two letters saying the exact same thing.
We're cupcakes compared to some other schools at their home games.
Remember that stressed spelled backwards is desserts!

What are the obscene lyrics for "Go Cyclones Go"? Better yet, what the hell is that song? The only one that springs to mind is the end of a song that we say "Go Cyclones Go" but I have not heard any other words associated with it.

What has traditionally been said: "You Suck!"
Insted of singing "Go Cyclones Go" which nobody knows, people sing the popular "Don't know the words" words
"Don't know the words
Don't know the words
Don't know the words to this stupid F***ing Song!!!"
Hey!
Hey!
Hey hey hey!
Repeat chorus...

I completely agree with them and honestly I think the band should just stop playing the song.

Maybe they have a point. -
Re: Pollard's and Jeff Johnson's email to Cyclone alley
I don't know how long the tradition has been to sing it like that, but it's been going on for the three years that I've been here.

Re: Pollard's and Jeff Johnson's email to Cyclone alley
While alot of it makes me laugh, they are right. We are representing a school with values. If Missouri has fans that have no tact, so be it, we are better than they are! Ill take a clever chant over vulgarity any day.

Iowa State building sheep one person at a time!
Screw that...get drunk, clap 5 times and say "you suck," sing Dont know the words to this stupid _____ song AND sing were going to beat the ____ out of you!
Its not like the students are chanting F-you Mizzou or anything like that. Seriously maybe JP's focus should be on raising money for the stadium and Hilton improvements
