This Could Come to Haunt Us Later In the Season...
"Through four Big 12 games, ISU only has 27 points from its bench (6.7 ppg)."
By the end of the season, our starters could be worn down a little, and if we don't have any depth, then I don't see us winning much down the stretch.

It's no secret we're not going to get much from our bench other than defense and some erratic scoring.

Reminds me of a few years back, when all we had was starters. It did make the starters tougher though by the end of the season. I guess it has its rewards.

Good stat.
If you look at our bench we dont have any scoreres besides DG.
Thats one reason Im hoping Mac DOES use the extra scholarships we have for next year. No reason to think we will ever be able to count on CJ, SH, or AT for scoring.
On a side note.... I hope that CJ improves a LOT in the off season to provide the type of player I thought we had when we signed him. Its not his fault our expectations were so I, but we really need SOMETHING besides traveling calls and turnovers from him. I really dont want to have to add him to the list of recruits that never panned out.

The bench players dont take many shots so it is hard to score when that happens.
The gap in our economy is between what we have and what we think we ought to have--and that is a moral problem, not an economic one. - Paul Heyne -

So, was cory johnson expected to contribute right away? He hasn't impressed me much so far, but he could be a good contributor by his senior year.

I am pretty surprised by lack of production by Haluska and Boozer, they both played pretty well in the non-conference.

Yeah, aside from a couple early games - Boozer has been a non-factor all season. Haluska can't make a shot (aside from a 2-point bucket now and then) to save his life.

I don't think we need 30 ppg out of our bench, but certainly more than 6 or 7 ppg. I think if our defense continues to play well, we can still do well with maybe 15-20 ppg from our bench down the stretch.

This thread is about gettting points from our bench. Haluska was productive in the non-conference season? shooting about 10% and 0 for 20-some from 3 point land.
Man, you can find some strange statements on a message board.

Re: This Could Come to Haunt Us Later In the Season...
This is probably crazy-talk, but what would happen if we started Thompson, told him to play great D and get rebounds, then brought Jiri off the bench after 3-4 minutes or so?
Jiri has been getting quick fouls and being taken out of his game, and this has really hurt us.
Forever trying to find a cure for the Dunning-Kruger Effect. -

To all that are questioning Mike's statement that Haluska and Boozer played well in non-conference: I'm pretty positive he means preseason. If I recall correctly, Haluska and Boozer were both knocking down their shots in those couple games. I know that I was excited for both of them going into the season.

I did mean preseason. I only got to go to those games so I just associated them with non-conference.
Technically they WERE non-conference.

It's hard to contribute much when you're sitting on the bench. When Cory's been in the game, he's been one of our most efficient scorers. He leads the team in FG percentage at 65.7% on 23-35 shooting. He has turned the ball over too much though with 16 turnovers.
