Re: No students... no balcony.
For what it's worth, I bought season tickets, and haven't used many because I didn't know I would be as busy as I have been this winter. Tried to sell them, give them away, posted some here, no bites at all. :shrugs:

So what you end up with is some students up there who arent very into the game, some that are, a bunch of empty seats, and a bad view. Not a recipe for a good student experience in those seats. The other problem is that since there is only a limited number of CA memberships you can sell when some of those kids have conflicts, which will and does happen, you get a few empties in the lower section. As far as I see it the best solution would be to make every student ticket have the price of cyclone alley built in and they get their shirt and if you want to sit in the lower section you have to wear it. I agree. I was there when CA was first made and it definitely split the students. It took a great deal of unity away.

As for tonight all of Hilton was pretty empty, but the student section has consistently not been filling the balcony...
I've discussed thoughts about that before so I won't now but yeah.. I won't be suprised to see that cut next year

Re: No students... no balcony.
I had a 6:00 class tonight, so thats why I wasn't there. I was really debating whether or not to go but I decided it would be smart to skip next weeks class against A&M instead. When you have 3 hour classes only 1 day a week, its like missing 3 classes. I am really disappointed with the turnout of the students and I think they should be reduced again if it means having every fan there be energetic and have it really be a home court advantage. But then do the alumni and everyone fill the seats that got taken away from us the students. Thats the question that needs to get answered.

Re: No students... no balcony.
The problem isn't nights like tonight, Pollard said as much in the article that students have tests, classes, etc. It's games like OSU last Saturday afternoon when we can't fill even a few rows in the balcony.

Re: No students... no balcony.
The only way they can fix this is by overselling tickets I guess. If they cut back on the balcony, a percentage of people still won't come. The article in the Daily also mentioned that around 200 people bought tickets and never even picked them up. Only 1800 tickets were sold for Kansas out of 2400 so that means there will be 600 open seats - unless they sell this tickets later?

Re: No students... no balcony.
I hate to sound like a downer, but it is true students do not want to see an average team. The true fans will be there but with the conditions outside its just another excuess for them not to come. For example look at how well Drake is doing this year and they have said on the news that students are coming out of the wood work because they are winning. A few years ago you could not find a Drake basketball fan except for the super fans.
Tonight, Hilton was both not filled by students but also by season ticket holders. The team just has to start winning more to get more fans.

Just flat out lack of interest from the ISU students. There were over 100 empty seats in the parquet of CA tonight and a TON open up top. I still contend that this is largely due to conditions that make it very hard for students to attend just a few games.
One of the biggest things is that the shirt requirement reduces the transferability of tickets. Where it used to only require a ticket and getting there early to sit near the court, students now must also have the right shirt. Since very few season ticket holders are going to give their shirt to someone else, their is much less of a market for unused student tickets. Therefore when season ticket holders don't go to the games, their seats are unused.
Secondly, the fact that student season tickets are sold out means that students who would otherwise attend just some of the games cannot get a student ticket at the games.
The combination of these two factors has likely resulted in a dramatic reduction in attendance by non-season ticket holders.
My solution would be to make the entire student section Cyclone Alley and charge the same for all of the tickets. If they still want to have the shirt requirement they could probably do so as long as they had a cheap supply of them available for sale at the games themselves so that anyone without a shirt could pick one up for $6 or something like that. The article also reported that there were actually 182 students who never even picked up their tickets this year. In that case they should sell at least 182 single game student tickets for each game. Additionally, if their new scanning system allows them to keep a running tally on game day they could oversell the student section if student attendance did not look up to par.

Re: No students... no balcony.
I don't know if other places do this, but the Saint Paul Saints baseball team offers walk-up tickets that are only available 20 minutes or less before gametime when it is apparent that there are going to be seats available. They are steeply discounted, and pretty popular.

Re: No students... no balcony.
why don't we just rag on students some more, it is always the students fault when there aren't enough people in the game, how about next game all of students forkingout plenty to this university start threads complaining about all the season ticket holders. Not only were there students missing in cyclone alley but there were more then enough missing in the parquet section where our hi-end donators sit. Why know complaining about these slackers who choose not to go to the game because they have work the next day. We have more then enough homework/exams to do and the majority of us still find ways to go to the game. I have an exam tomorrow and used the game a nice little getaway from studying for a couple hours and then hit them when i got back tonight, although i was second guessing my decision at half time. That first half was horrible.

This is another thing to point out. I doubt that the percentage of student season ticket holders was that much lower than regular season ticket holders. The student section just looks worse because everyone is packed towards the front because its general admission, leaving a large obvious section that is very empty. For example, I got my tickets for the Missouri game from a season ticket holder, and my row in the lower level was only about half full. The section as a whole didn't look as bad though just because everyone was fairly evenly spread out.

Re: No students... no balcony.
I just personally think it's lame that students live mostly within a 30 minute walk of Hilton and still dont come. Oh well, I guess Im more used to a college that was big into athletics. I just probably dont understand the ISU mentality.
