I have SERIOUS doubts about McDermott

I am very, very close to jumping on the "McDermott is not the right coach for ISU" bandwagon.

To describe why, I have come up with something Albert Einstein used to do: a thought experiment. Imagine that we had access to a genuine time machine, and could use it to allow this team and a certain Johnny Orr team to play each other. The team I am thinking of (I forget the year -- sorry) was the one in which Fred Hoiberg was a freshman. Which team would win?

I think that Johnny Orr team would win, fairly easily. Now what I'd like to talk about is: why? This team (this year's team) is light years ahead of that J.O. team in terms of raw talent, experience, etc. We would excel in almost every area -- and lose. That J.O. team had very little experience or talent, but still managed to win games and claw their way into the NCAA Tournament, and even get to the second round before losing to a very hungry Kentucky team. This team is way ahead of that team in terms of both talent and experience, but we couldn't think about the NCAAs right now at all, period.

What is it that is so completely missing from this team? We have experience and talent galore, and still suck. Ultimately, that falls on the coach, which is why I am having serious doubts about McDermott.

Oh, and by the way, I turned the game off. Even if we somehow win, we don't deserve to.

Re: I have SERIOUS doubts about McDermott

The thing that sucks... if Mcd ends up not being the coach of the future, which I'm starting to think is VERY possible! We probably aren't going to end up getting the best basketball player to come out of Iowa in a long time! Not to mention he lives in the same town!!

Dude, I went from being mad at Mcd but wanting him to stay to being totally un-caring. If JP said tomorrow that McD was let go, I really wouldn't care.

Here is another little thing to help you get on the "anti-McD" bus: Can you name one game in which McD out-coached a team that had more talent than us? Me either. Actually, can you name a team that McD out-coached....period?

I would question this assumption. Our talent is not yet Big 12 caliber. We have potential in Brackins and Garrett. What I would question at this point is why they are still playing like freshman this late in the season.

I too am getting close. I honestly don't see any resemblance of a team that has been "coached". I could understand if we scored 11 and Greg was doing a Larry with the starters sitting them on the bench teaching them a lessen. But Greg appears in alignment with what's taking place on the floor. How could a coach not make serious adjustments and lay down the hammer with any player not following suit.

WE HAVE EXPERIENCE AND TALENT GALORE? Are you out of your fricking mind?

All I have read about on here all season is how we don't have any talent or experience? Is this experience you speak of Jiri and Rashon? 2 guys? Is that experience galore?

I am truly speechless.

What do Cyclone fans and Hawkeye fans have in common?
Neither one ever attended the University of Iowa.

We have more talent than JO's squad? I wish.

what? gonna post this again...

...but patience is the key with McDermott. As much as it seems like some times we are regressing, I believe the foundation is being laid for a perenially competitive team in the Big 12 race.
Consider McDermott's records in the first 2 years at his 3 previous schools.

Have faith Cyclone fans. Better days are ahead. Much better. I was very frustrated tonight so I wanted to see what has been done at prior stops. By my estimation, we should be looking at a 20 win season next year.
Wow that Koolaid tastes good.

Re: I have SERIOUS doubts about McDermott

There is still another half left. No doubt horrible first half, if the second half is the same outcome and no adjustments made not good for Mcdermott and staff. All in all raw talent needs time to fully develop we WILL get there, just growing pains first.

we have to wait and see what he can do after he actually has his people in his system. He's been here two years and each year he's had to start over. Let's see if things change if people stay around. My concern is why people are defecting...

I am not impressed right now, but I don't think that now is the right time to call for a coaches head!

I am tired of the excuses on why Greg's at a disadvantage. He needs to show improvement with what he does have and I have seen none.

Re: I have SERIOUS doubts about McDermott

I'll wait until next year to pass judgement. He's dealing with a bare cupboard of players who were role players, not leaders. He's done very well to recruit some players that could come in hungry, but that takes time for them to gel.

Next year will be one to watch.

Agree completely, everyone says we have no talent and experience and act like that is an above all excuse and that we can't get better because of that! I remember people said the same things about the football team at the beginning and guess what Chizik's team that had no talent played very well for what they had towards the end of the year! I have yet to see that for this basketball team!
