Are you concerned about Men's BB recruiting?
Given all the discussion lately about the direction of the Men's BB program, I thought it would be interesting to see a poll on how everyone feels GMac is doing on the recruiting front.
This is not intended to be a slam on the Men's BB program. I just want to check the pulse of how most feel.

Re: Are you concerned about Men's BB recruiting?
i'm not to happy about the 08 recruits, for the exception of buckley and maybe eikemeir, but i think if we start to win more we will obviously get some better recruits, so it's up to mcdermott to start winning, and everyone knows that the 3rd year mcdermott is at a school they win 20 plus games and go to the ncaa tournament that year

I want to see him coach in a year where we have a returning guard, fewer injuries and no NCAA killing us with a bad ruling.
Remember that stressed spelled backwards is desserts!
"The New England Patriots: As annoying as the Yankess, just with 23 fewer titles." -

Agreed - I want to see him coach a team that has at least some experience. I feel bad that talents like Rashon and Jiri won't see the fruits of their labor, but the youth that got played this year will only help when some more talent comes in the door.
Right now I'm not worried nor satisfied with the recruiting in general. Obviously, we got a kid like Brackins. We're getting Buckley. I can handle, somewhat, getting one star talent per class and assemble a bunch of team guys that bring certain great skills, even if not the most overall talented basketball player according to a ratings system.
We'll see I guess...

Let the man work. Seriously. He's still in Year 2...essentially Year 1.

We'll see I guess... Like Chiz says, it's not about getting the best athletes, it's about getting the right athletes. All our recruits don't need to have 5 stars next to their name to be successful.

That doesn't seem like a lot to ask, but then again. As long as I'm wishing, how about no players leaving, and none getting into trouble.

Results so far reflect what I would have expected given the opinions in threads recently.

Re: Are you concerned about Men's BB recruiting?
Hard to say...not many big names coming in for '08 but not much came in two yrs ago and we did get Mike T and Wes out of that class very late and I like this years class...So until they actually get here and I see them play I wont be passing judgement

Re: Are you concerned about Men's BB recruiting?
Backcourt recruiting looks to be in good hands, not concerned at all there. The front court on the other hand.... I voted "I'm a little concerned, but not losing sleep" just because I feel good about Diante, Lucca, Wes Elk, and Buckley the next few years. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't very concerned about what we plan to do inside next year and the year after. We're one key big man signing away from being in great shape IMO.

Re: Are you concerned about Men's BB recruiting?
I voted concerned, but I only say that because I think we need a decent signee for next year. I like the classes McD has gotten so far, and the class coming in doesn't blow my mind, but it is still solid. Someone pointed out in a previous thread that this next class has someone for almost every position (even if some of them are projects right now).
I think it boils down to this: if McD can have a solid year next year and show some improvements, he will have a lot to sell new recruits. I see right now that McD only has hope and promises to sell, but if he gets a solid year under him, I think the close battles we've been losing lately start going our way. -
I Like Next Years Class
Having not seen any of the kids play, I'm willing to trust G-Macs judgement. I like the pieces he has assembled:- Buckley is a true PG. We need a penetrate & dish PG and kid who can put pressure on the opposing PG.
- Eikmeier is a quality jump shooter. IMO athleticism is overrated and I'll take a deadeye from 18-20 ft anyday.
- Mann sounds like a tough kid- I'm hoping Greg Brunner. A kid who can be physical in the post and rebound.
- Hamilton adds height and I hope based on 10 blocks in his state championship game he can add that dimension to ISU.
Add that to Garrett (sold combo guard especially as he gets stronger), Staiger (big guard who can shoot and nice passing skills), Brackins (athletic post - huge upside) and Boozer (great range on jumper- question is if he can develop rest of game).
If the expectation is next years class immediately makes ISU a top 3-5 Big 12 team- I think fans will be disappointed. If the sophomore class steps up, I see a 6-8 win team in 08/09 and a push for the top tier of the Big 12 in 09/10. If at least 2 sophs don't make big strides, we'll be battling CU for the Big 12 celler.
The key will be retention, we can't lose a Staiger, W. Johnson, Brackins or Garrett.
Next falls class will be key. It may not be a large group but he needs to hit a homerun on a wing scorer and a brusing post scorer.

Re: Are you concerned about Men's BB recruiting?
I am concerned about the lack of improvement through a season. I don't care if GMac gets a team of high-school sophomores, that team should play better at the end of the season than at the beginning. I can't see that happening with this team.

Re: Are you concerned about Men's BB recruiting?
I like what we have coming in, but I'll wait to see what we add during spring signing. Ideally I would like to see us get a guard and/or a center from the Jucos.
BTW, anyone know how many schollies we have left? I think we have two, but I don't remember.

Re: Are you concerned about Men's BB recruiting?
I don't think we really have an idea yet how this class will turn out yet.
I'm not saying these are NBA guys (although that's not bad, either), but what would people have said when Hornacek walked on?
Maybe that's been dealt with somewhere already. If so, my bad.
