Do you think Jiri is better than Sammy Hill, Victor Alexander, Kelvin Cato, Homan, Vroman, Paul Shirley?
Are we going to miss Jiri next season, of course, but not compared to the above mentioned players.
Whoa!!! DG did a good job of understanding his game as well as being agressive and being rewarded. He had a lot of layups due to penetration and he had A LOT of FT as a result of being fouled by being aggressive. I think he made 1 (maybe 2 if you count the last sec shot at regualtion) that could be considered a set jump shot. HE is a great example of getting points by being agressive and getting to the FT line. But I don't thikn we can confuse him for a shooter.... at least not yet.
That game was so similar of the game in Hilton though. Except, when Mizzu made their run in the 2nd half the first time, our guys had the crowd to pick them back up.
It's quite obvious we still don't know how to overcome adversity on the road. We certainly don't quit, but when things go bad on the road - we can't seem to stop the downhill slide. That's gotta get fixed. That game is in Hilton and we win - but - it wasn't. And, it really wouldn't have hurt us to have our best scorer (Wes) making shots, or a healthy Jiri and Rahshon.
About our heart...
I'd be 10x more concerned about this team and our program if we had a few more wins, yet in some of our losses we had given up - like we could have done last night. We've never really quit and I completely admire our team for it. It bodes well for the future that we've lost so many games - yet almost every single player is giving 100% - playing each possession like it's the one that could win it for us. I really don't care how you slice it, that is good coaching in that respect.
In a year our guys could've easily quit on each other and the coach - and they have not - well - I like our chances in the future.
That game was a great example of the entire 2007-2008 basketball season!
After sorting through 154 posts in this thread, I think the truth is somewhere in between. We played a good game against a team that was somewhat lethargic in the first 24 minutes of the game. A team that has a horrible half court defense, a team that does not have big powerful post players.. Coach A called a TO early in the second half, down by 12, chewed some *****, and caught up in 4-5 minutes. Cyclones lost composure. Not mentally tough enough. See-saw game from then on, but this game should have never gone into overtime. GMac is on record saying this team is not mentally tough, and it sure showed at crunch time. I am soon going to have to "eat crow" at least in my thoughts concerning DG. His improvement in the last 4-5 games gives me hope. (never thought he would come this far, this fast) Last 2 games from Brakins shows some promise also. Defensively, we still have the same problem we have had all year. Lyons and Carroll are not great or big post players, but good athletes. They went for 19 and 24 points against out post "defense". Not sure defense is the correct term here.
We played lousy defense compounded by giving mizzou the ball at the end of the game...You have to give Mizzou credit, mizzou figured out a way to win a game on their court with maybe 1500 fans in the seats...
Next year has gotta be better cause I dont think we can win fewer than 4 games next year which if you havent noticed is g-mac's 3rd year!!!!
And to make matters worse, how many of us lost credits on this game? They had the under through regulation and through the first overtime. If we're going to lose, I should at least make credits off it. Last night was an all-around bummer.
And yes I was deeply heartbroken by the loss, I'm just trying to take the sting off by sublimating my gambling addiction.
Diante was a stud last night. Brackins also looked better to me. The Freshman are finally coming around.
Stacy King who was announcing the game last night shold have watched some game tape on Wesley Johnson before saying Wesly's 3 point shot at the end of one of the overtimes was a "poor choice of shots".
I'm glad the year is almost over but do feel positive about our prospects for next year.
All year long I've thought the team has looked the best when we have gone with 3/4 guards and a post. We seem to get the most ball movement this way and some ability to drive to the goal.
