Re: Coach McD on radio
IMO, Wayne was a pretty good recruiter...but people very much underestimate the difference in taking over a program that you've been involved with, and taking over a different program...Stinson, Blalock, Homan, Vroman, and Sullivan were familiar with Wayne because he was on the ISU staff, so obviously they were comfortable sticking around when Wayne was hired, where as McDermott came into a situation here, where the players were not familiar with him...too many people here use Wayne's situation of "convincing the players to stay", as an example of how McD should've been able to convince Taggart, Carr, Degand, etc...to stick around...they are two completely different situations, and it's an unfair comparison...call me an apologist if you want for pointing out facts...but I guess I'd rather be rational and realistic any day of the week than what I've seen a lot of on here lately. You're entitled to have your doubts, but at least make sense, and rational arguments when you try to express your doubts...some people are FAR better than others at this.

Its not as though Mac's recruiting classes have sucked. Go back and compare them to Morgan's recruiting (the scout and rivals databases only go back to 2002). Outside of a couple of players (Stinson, Blalock, and Taggert) we didn't get anyone better than a 3 star to campus and lost numerous players once they were already here. So far Mac has gotten Brackins and a lot of 3 star guys, and lost a few of them as well. The talent level of the recruits we are getting is virtually identical.
The only difference is that Mac lost virtually the whole team during the transition. Morgan was an assistant coach who was selected largely to keep the team intact. Larry also was an assistant, so his transition was not difficult. I'm a bit too young to remember the Floyd transition, but from what I can tell he got fairly lucky.
Expect Doc to get better talent as they win and he uses his AAU connections. Plan on the Big 12 as being no cakewalk in the future. Those days are gone for now. I consider the cupboard as extremely bare when Doc Sadler was hired. kNU was a joke. They almost lost everyone of consequence including Marik. Check it out. Doc has d a worse situation than we did in McD's first year. We just lost the first year when Dodie, Corey, Mike all left for other pastures.
Looking forward to CFH magic for the next bball season, Georges style. -

What year was the Big 12 or the Big 8 for that matter ever a cake walk? -

Never really, but there were years where there would be definite dominants and the extremely weak. Now there is no for sure wins. Any team could have beat anyone this year. It was scary.

Just goes to show what a little talent, blended with experience does, opposed to a little talent, and youth. Thats why it will be interesting to see what happens next year as they will have more 'talent' and a little less experience.

Excluding graduation, 13 Cyclones have left the program since Mac was hired just about 24 months ago, correct? (Eight of Wayne's guys, plus Dodie, Corey, Taylor, Brister, and Vette, if I've got 'em all.)
Doc had this kind of turnover and resulting instability? (I'm not familiar with NU much, so it's a serious question, not a rhetorical question posed as an argument.)
(I won't blame Mac much for those defections. He and his staff, in the wake of the eight bailing out, had little time to vet the guys they recruited in a hurry in April 2006 and later departed -- Dodie, Corey, and Mike. No choice but to take chances and hope for the best.)
(Vette, his Dad absolved Mac of any and all responsibility for his son's difficulties. Leaves Brister as an unknown for me, maybe others here know what that was all about.)

Brister had a daughter, and he wanted to be by her, and he also had attitude problems.

Guess Mac could have done a better job evaluating Brister's fitness for the ISU program. Wonder what Mac's thinking was at the time he extended the offer. Knew it was a gamble? . . . Had some assurances from some quarters all would be fine? . . .
