I watched the game on NET, and watched Garrett play 3 games last year in the Wisc. tournement on Wisc. public TV. I realize the competition level was not the same, but I am much more impressed with Eikmeier than I was with DG as a HS senior. Wes E is much more aggressive. He's playing against small school guys but was easily the quickest. In a foot race with the rest of the field he would win easily. Nothing wrong with his size that maturity won't fix. Reminds me a lot of Hoiberg, in game, size, and physical appearance. Beasley has dominated several games this year. Michael Jordan used to just take over some games. But I have NEVER, in 60+ years of basketball, seen a player dominate a game like Wes E did yesterday. I'm not saying he is another Hoiberg, Beasley, or Jordan, but this kid is GOOD!!

I think he's more a Jeff Hornacek type. Quick release, he could blow away in the wind. Hoiberg had a little more meat on his bones, but not a bad compairson.

Wow....comparisons to Hoiberg, Hornacek, Beasley and even MJ! Wow. He has been swimming in the "small pond" of NE HS BB...we shall see next year how he does in the "big pond" of Big 12 BB.
|
I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

Who would you compare him to, since you seem to know how his career will turn out? Give me some names.

Take our comments for what their worth. We've seen them all play and this kid looks a lot like those two.

FYI to you...Hoiberg played in Iowa in a slightly larger setting than this kid did in NE and Hornacek was from Illinois...Chicago area, I believe.

I'd actually be pretty happy if he is like Brian Pearson. He had some good games for us, and was a heady and steady player. I'm not expecting a lot out of Eik, but I don't think he needs to be a superstar to be a good player for us.
Hit the open three, be a good, smart ballhandler, make the right pass, hit some freethrows...these are all things I think he will be capable of doing, and that is enough for me.

Oh Iowa HS basketball is not much different than Nebraska...How many Lottery picks come out of either state? Raef Lafrenz is the only one who comes to mind(oh Jess Settles was supposed to be but that's a different story. )
Good point on Hornacek but I'm sure he didn't score any records in Illinois high school baketball history and he was last guy you'd figure to make it in the NBA.
Maybe Eikemeir will be one of those type player, maybe he won't. Just don't berate some of us for saying he looks good right now and even a bit like those Cyclone legends who we saw play. | | |

I am excited to see him suit up and play. He looks to have some good bball IQ. Good passing, sharp shooting, and isnt afraid to draw contact. I hope he and Lucca give opposing teams fits. Maybe Ike will be that Larry Bird type player who was a quiet threat. Hated by other teams for his ability to make tough shots when they count.

After looking at some of the videos I think Ike is going to be a great player. I don't think he has any physical short comings that I hear so much about. Nothing more then Diante or Wesley did as freshmen in being small (muscle). He definitely has a great shot, great IQ, and the mental toughness to want to be good.
I can't image the pressure to carry your team knowing everyone is depending on you and you knowing you're the only option. To be able to handle that, focus on the game, make a high percentage of you shots, and block out an injury really makes me excited about this kid.
While I don't think he's going to be a MJ or Shaq type player in D1 MBB, he definitely belongs as a shooting guard at the D1 level that may have impact as early as his first year. I imagine Ike will work as hard as anyone to take advice to quickly learn and improve even more during his 4 years at ISU. He appears to fit the mold of low maintenance / risk while being a team player with the intangibles needed to "earn" success. In thinking you need about 7 very good MBB players to have a great team, I think he is definitely one piece of that puzzle.
Also, not getting racial here, but I honestly think the fact that he's a small town basketball player with white skin doesn't make him as appealing at first glance. But looking at Duke last night and what Kirk did for KU tells us you don't have to be of color and play at Rucker Park to be a good D1 player.
I think Wes is more than deserving of one scholarship and will earn our support / respect / gratitude over the next 4 years.

He looks really skinny, but he can also bench 235, almost twice as much as Diante could when he came here. 235 is impressive for how skinny he looks, and if he can add more muscle over the summer, he can/will contribute right away.

. Exactly, mental toughness! That is one aspect that will help us immensley!

I'm excited about his potential, too, but I'm not sure how he cracks the lineup next year with Lucca, Haluska, Garrett, Buckley, and BP in the guard court.
I wonder if redshirting would be a good idea?
