Re: Fremont Bergan (Eikmeier) wins state going 27-0 (long)

When they were not in the 1-3-1 zone, Wes usually played man to man on a foward, usually bigger and heavier.

Thanks for the update...we so need a guy that can fill it up right now.

JOIN THE NATIONAL CYCLONE CLUB!
“If we truly want to do this, this is the time to step up. Iowa State University has 175,000 living alumni. If one-of-every-10 living alumni joined the National Cyclone Club at the minimum level of $100, we could finance $30 million worth of construction." Jamie Pollard

Several times this season during his call-in show, Mac has mentioned that his guys are tremendous young men but must improve their toughness (physically on the court and mentally when the game is close or the other team is making a run).

In comparing Clint Mann to CJ for a caller, Mac said that Clint is quicker, more athletic and better on the perimeter than CJ. But, said Mac, the chief asset Clint brings to Iowa State is mental toughness.

Ike appears to be a tough guy, playing through pain, easily accepting the high challenge to shoulder his team and carry it (look at his shooting stats, he seems to thrive under pressure). Ike gives every appearance, imho, of being a tough, tough kid.

I haven't heard a direct comment about Dom's toughness, but maybe the inference is there in that he's enjoyed a wonderful senior season and has been a picture of consistency. And, he's very good at defense and relishes the defender's role. Is it accurate to say that to be really good at defense in high school requires mental discipline?

And what of big Justin Hamilton? Reports are that his work ethic -- proven by his rapid development this season, you'd think -- is outstanding. He has gotten so much better just since signing with ISU in November. I'm gonna guess such improvement only comes from a mental toughness that allows you to work your tail off and get lots of extra gym work.

My point? I wonder if our incoming class doesn't possess a toughness quality that we've overlooked when discussing its merits.

Mac has talked about the need for the Cyclones to become mentally tougher. He said game experience and getting bigger and stronger in the weightroom is one way to bring along young players. Another way is to recruit tough kids, he said.

I wonder if Clint, Ike, Dom, and Justin weren't offered ISU scholarships in part because they possess a certain mental toughness.

Just speculating. . . .

Looks like he's more than a shooter to me. Good body control, drove and pulled up, whatever it took.

Let's see him hit the weight room and go through the summer conditioning drills, and hopefully he can contribute next year.

I don't expect him to start or carry us, but I do expect to see quality minutes out of him right away

Mind the gap!

I will say this even though I will probably get accused of overhyping him.....

His game reminds me of Kirk Hinrich when he was a freshman at KU.

Wes Eikmeier now holds the record for most points scored in the Neb State tournement. 123, I think

I haven't seen either in person, like most of us on this board, but I think Eik is further along in his physical development than DG, and also in basketball skills. DG is a better athlete.

You don't need to start to get quality minutes. And we have plenty of minutes to go around. Especially w/ a 3 guard linuep.

Yes, exactly like DG this year, who obviously needs to get stronger and gain weight. He might be strong, but can he absorb the contact? That will probably be something we won't find out until next season even after the CCL, because it's not like anybody plays defense down there.
