Fremont Bergan (Eikmeier) wins state going 27-0 (long)

St Francis was 23 and 2 for the season and 2nd ranked in the state coming in to the game. They had a 6’ 10” center, not overly talented, but did a good job of stopping the Bergan inside game. Bergan’s tallest player is 6’3”. Bergan only got beat 29 to 28 on rebounds.

On the Bergan side this was the most dominating performance by one player I have seen at any level in a game, sore back and all. The Bergan team defense was working very well today holding St Francis to 37% shooting from the field and getting 24 turnovers.

The Bergan team offense disappeared. Wes did his best to get his teammates involved, but most could not make their shots and then they did not even try to take a shot. Wes scored 19 of the teams 21 points in the first half and 43 of the teams 56 points. Wes was 10 of 11 for 2’s (91%), 6 of 11 for 3’s (55%) and 5 of 7 from the line. Wes had multiple steals and fast breaks for lay ups. The rest of the team shot 5 of 23 for 2’s (22%), 2 of 10 for 3’s (20%) and 1 of 4 from the line.

I followed some St. Francis fans walking out my. They could not believe one player could dominate the game the way Wes did.

It is too bad Wes was injured and could not show case his athletic ability more, but then with 35 points on Friday and 43 points today, maybe we need him to have a bad back his whole career at ISU.

Wes ended the year with 896 points, 31.1 ppg, taking only 19.9 shots per game for 53.4%. He average 3.8 3’s made per game and made 176 free throws for 90.7%.

A friend was taking pictures and video and I will post when he gets them to me.

Only thing left now is the end season player awards.

That's exciting! Thanks for the good work.
He almost sounds like a guy that could play a little

Cri-men-ent-ly! Woo-eeeeee. . . .

Next stop, Ames, Iowa! Come on down, Ike!!!

The question might be can Greg afford not to have Ike on the floor at times next season in a spot duty role as a gunner, if nothing else (so early in his collegiate career).

NebrClone, sounds like Ike has the handle no doubt, but does he have the quicks to get his own shot in the Big 12, or will ISU have to set screens (something our guys must get better at, I hear) for him to get open consistently?

Eventually, with Lucca and Ike on the floor at the same time, with Wes and Craig down low, and with Diante or Dom driving and dishing, could be our offensive blues will fade away.

He can also pass.

Wes is quick enough, very good faking with the ball and a very fast 1st step to get by anyone. He can go to the bucket or pull up in the 10-15 range easily. Watch the videos on the Fremont Tribune site.

When did Wes get hurt? Has he played the entire season with a bad back?

He hurt his back on Friday during pre game stretching. Did not take any warm up on Friday and scored 35.

See! See! This is why I get so excited (and at my age, too)!

Ike, point guard-type handle, "he can also pass," and, boy, he can shoot a little, too.

Ok, Ok, I'll repeat what I've posted several times. Mac has said that comparing Ike and Lucca's play, Ike has the better handle, Lucca is the team's best passer.

With Diante and Petey emerging from the searing flames of this testing season and ready to battle on, can't we all see what ball-handling, passing, and bombs-away outside shooting can do for this team next season? Won't these guys free up the pressure on Wes, Craig and Alex down under?

I just don't see how this team won't step up importantly next season (but I'll settle down, I've been disappointed before too many times).

I think Ike is just a bit slow and his ball handling skills need to improve. Great pure shooter however and you get him wide open he'll nail it.

Thank you, NebrClone. Love reading that Ike's "quick enough" for Big 12 basketball wars. Faking-first step might let him overcome some of the physical bumping stuff he'll go up against.

Have you ever seen him play live before?

I can't wait to get this guy on campus. At the very least, GMAC did a good job of evaluating a great player.

Wes does not shy away from contact and can complete the shot or take the free throws.
