Re: In state recruiting just got tougher....
Watch Witchita State and new coach for Missouri State That may be a key for the league if those teams get better. If Drake goes Great Eight, that might help league recruiting, maybe even walkon recruiting.
Wonder if Emmennecher almost stopped in to see Wayne in Ames to be a walkon but kept driving from Saginaw to Des Moines and Drake where he thought they had fine academics.
Looking forward to CFH magic for the next bball season, Georges style. -

Re: In state recruiting just got tougher....
Good. Competition breeds success both externally and internally.
And, as long as Keno is at Drake - I don't see them going away anytime soon. They return a lot of guys next year and have a nice class coming in. Even after next season, I think they'll be very competitive. Again, as long as Keno is coaching 'em.

New rival games might be Creighton - Drake.

Re: In state recruiting just got tougher....
If they lose first round of the tourney, everyone outside of the state of Iowa is going to forget about them and write them off as a fluke.
I'm not exactly worried about losing recruits to Drake.

Maybe I'm wrong, but UNI and Creighton both had good runs and did come back to earth.
It is the Valley and I still think a school like Drake will have trouble long term recruiting against schools like ISU and Iowa who offer solid educations and also have larger crowds, more T.V. time, and more money to throw at their programs. We shouldn't be so high and mighty.
Drake has been better than both Iowa and Iowa State for two years now.
And while MVC schools like Creighton and Bradley had good runs in years past and have come down to earth this year...guess what? They're still better than Iowa and Iowa State.

Watching basketball this year has really re-inforced to me that teams who do a good job of keeping there spacing really put alot of pressure on the defense.

Re: In state recruiting just got tougher....
You keep bringing up Marquette, but they are in the Big East. I mean that's different than the MVC, I'm sorry but it is.
Drake has been better than us for the last two years, but last year they were just as irrelevant as ISU. They've had a great year this year. But it's going to take more than one year before I really start believing they have what it takes to pass us on program strength. Where's George Mason this year? Where's Winthrop this year? Where's Vermont this year?
These are all teams that were great at one point and had a great run in the tournament. They are completely off the college basketball map now. We've seen runs like this before, and I'm happy for Drake players and fans (especially the ones that actually showed up to games prior to this year). As somebody else mentioned in this thread, when we won back to back Big 12 titles people would laugh in your face if you said Drake would be a better program in a few years. They've had a great year and they should enjoy it, and I don't doubt they can become a good program. There is just NO WAY of knowing that now.

Marquette just recently joined the Big East. They started making noise while in CUSA.

It may hurt Iowa more than ISU since it seems more kids from the state want to go to Iowa. This is exactly right. UNI had 3 years of success and didn't pull in the big name recruits. Why would Drake do that after 1 year of success? The Valley is way down this year compared to the years UNI had their run and that will make a difference in recruiting as well.

Re: In state recruiting just got tougher....
I know, but recruiting to there is obviously different than recruiting to Drake. Memphis is in C-USA too, but I don't think it's a comparable situation.
I just think people are going way overboard on Drake, just like people went way overboard on ISU when we were winning championships. It's great this year, but it doesn't mean anything in the long run.
I'm glad Drake coaches think they have the best recruiting class in the state. I'd be surprised if ISU or Iowa coaches didn't think they have the best recruiting class as well. I mean what else are they going to say?

Re: In state recruiting just got tougher....
I'm happy for the Drake fans that have been going to Drake games for the past 15 years or so, as well as the players themselves. The rest of them I couldn't care less for.

Right now most believe our program is in shambles and some are questioning our coach after less than 2 years. While Drake's is on top of the world and will be able to recruit with the big boys after just one year.
Not only do we define a program by 1 year, some are starting to define it on a game by game basis or for some people here a half by half basis...ie. our 11 point half at Nebraska means we are in the crapper and have no way out.
When in reality, neither is the case.
