Instant Gratification

Hi all, i posted the following on CR in response to some very irrational fans. Wanted to post here as well.

It really is too bad that society these days is way too focused on instant gratification. I have been critical as well, but if you take a step back, this is honestly what should have been expected.
1. Mac told us when he was hired that we should NOT expect quick fixes - that it would take time to install his philosophies and get consistency
2. Mac's history backs up statement #1. Every stop he has made did not see improvements until year 3 - likely due to wrong talent & complicated (but inevitably successful) offensive philosophies.
3. Talent drain has been excessive in the Morgan/Mac changeover.

In summary, I truly believe we have a coach in Mac that will make us very successful and won't bolt for a better job when he does so. Honestly, isn't this what every team in the nation would love to have - especially a team that doesn't have a rich tradition to fall back on (i.e Indiana, Duke, Kentucky, UCLA)??
Have some patience and stop demanding instant gratification in every aspect of life.

Arrived in STL via Ames, IA & Bloomington, IN!

Re: Instant Gratification

Something similar has been posted on here repeatedly.

This year has ended up just a few games behind my expectations. I'm not upset or angry. I am not "demanding" anything of the coaching staff because I'm not in a position to make demands and I don't know the first thing about running a successful basketball program.

This is the end of year two. Next year is year three. My problem at this point is that I don't believe we'll have a shot at the NCAA tourney next year. I don't doubt that Mac can make us successful but I have no problem with people who are skeptical right now, and I get tired of being scolded about it.

Now you've done it... the restless, shortsighted natives are now ready to pour our of the woodwork.

Stop with the sane and rational thinking... What do you mean be patient? Heck, it's been a full 2 years since we had mass exodus from an average pre-McD team. I mean most teams with 90% player turnover... a starting walk on guard... another walk on guard that garners decent minutes... 2 freshman that play major minutes...get it turned around in much quicker. Oh, and it helps that we are trying to turn it around in a powerhouse league like the Big 12.

Yup... I think we've been patient enough.

I'm biting my tongue until after next season. I've been frustrated this year but I also understand Greg got unlucky losing out on Lucca this year and he also got unlucky with the whole Mike Taylor situation. You insert those two guys into the lineup and things are a bit different. That being said, the excuses are over for McDermott and next year we need to see some wins. A few weeks ago I was kinda depressed about next season but I'm starting to feel better about it. For the first time we will have some guards coming back with experience and Lucca and Buckley can only help things out. Not to mention Brackins tore it up the last 2 weeks.

If you think we will be 8-10 wins better next year, I want some of what you're drinking. (I hope we are, but I don't see it.) After I watch the summer leagues and see some of the new players in action, I will have a better idea of where we will stand.

Re: Instant Gratification

The only concern I have with McDermott is that his style of basketball is BORING. I went to 3 games this year (Colorado, Nebraska, and USC Upstate) and I was bored out of my mind. I would have rather been at work than at the game. Even if he does win next year, I'm afraid that nobody is going to show up to the games. I will still come regardless but we won the 3 games I went to and I don't think I cheered all that often.

Tim Floyd's brand of basketball was boring, too, but winning is never boring.

Hopefully we can get to that winning part.

Were you bored in the 1st halves or 2nd halves? In a sense, with Colorado and Nebraska, you've been to 5 games this year.

What a bargain!

Tim Floyd's basketball wasn't boring. He actually had what are known as "fast break points" when he was coaching. Can you honestly name any time during the year at which point Iowa State went on a major run that was capped by a dunk and a time out by the other team with Hilton going nuts??? I had a buddy come up for that Colorado game and he laughed at me after I had hyped up Hilton Magic before the game. After the game was over, he told me that UNLV, New Mexico, BYU, Arizona, and USC were way louder than Hilton (he had been to all their venues)

Watching USC on tv, there is no, absolutely no, way that USC's stadium is louder than Hilton. The only people there are a bunch of rich preppies, and they don't get into the game at all.

Floyd's system was inherently boring, but he had athletes that made it possible to get some run-outs. Had Floyd been coaching this year's team, it would have been very similar.

You should have been to the Texas, Kansas, and Kansas State games. Those were anything but boring.

Instant gratification...it looks to me that we have received nearly no gratification in his 2 full seasons as head coach...you do realize that most head coaches in college only stay in one place for 5-10 years...this means that we are likely 20-40% into the McDermott era.

How nice of him to lower the bar of expectations for us as he took over the program...very noble.

I could not care less about what McDermott did at Wayne Community College, ND Tech, or puny UNI. His history at ISU is what I care about.

I place some of the blame for the talent drain you speak of at the feet of McDermott. He is not without fault on this point.

What evidence during his tenure at ISU makes you "truly believe" he will be "very successful" at ISU? How do you define "very successful"? Why is it so important to have a coach that won't "bolt for a better job"?

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

Re: Instant Gratification

That is a dried up excuse as far as I'm considered. Iowa State has talent on this team.

I pretty much quit posting on CR and came to this board because I got tired of people trying to lecture everyone.

Please don't start bringing the same CR attitude over here. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion regarding the state of the program.
