Purdue had just come off a loss to Wofford before losing to us. They were hardly playing well at the time.

Who should I listen to...Coach Floyd or the "experts" on CF? Tough call.

It's nice to see Mac getting some props.

Beating Purdue when we beat Purdue wasn't considered an upset. An upset is when a team is considered a Top 20 team coming into the game. At that time, Purdue was considered middle of the Big 10 although up and coming and they weren't even close to being rated.

While we may not have figured they were that great.... their fans were telling us at the game they expected at least Sweet 16 and maybe elite 8 with that group.

I thought it was a very nice compliment - and since the reporter never mentioned McDermott I would tend to think it is genuine.

On another note, why do all the negative nancies always have some sort of insinuation that they are the #1 fan? Examples: isuno1fan, cyclonenum1.
I'm starting to think they aren't as good a fan as their names imply. lol.

That is a little sarcasm for you . . . just making sure : )

They had also just beat Louisville on a neutral court...not to mention our previous game before that against a team worth anything was a 44-79 loss to Drake...It was an upset.

Don't get me wrong, the Purdue win was a NICE win. I did not expect to win that game and the team played/shot well that night.

However no one was calling that a marquee win afterwards. That is an indicator right there that it wasn't one.

so you would rather base how good a win was by how the team's preseason expectations were... or how good they had been early in the season?

I think its much more clear after the season. Purdue obviously was pretty good.

Just like losing to Drake feels different now than at the time.

Teams improve and regress over the season. Purdue was not the same team in December as they were in January.

Re: Floyd: Mac is a helluva coach

Purdue is definately a much improved team now...and we were a much improved team at the end of the year too (just not as talented)...Bottom line is nobody outside of some ISU fans and our team expected ISU to win that game...they weren't the same team in December as they were in January, but they were still definately better than us...they lost to Wofford, they also beat Louisville on national tv on a neutral court, where as we took ot to beat an absolute horrid Oregon State team, and got absolutely flattened by Drake. Upsets are upsets, whether it's a bad team over a mediocre team, or a mediocre team over a great team. We didn't beat UCLA, but that was an upset.

Re: Floyd: Mac is a helluva coach

Its just how bad you actually think Purdue was ....

When we played them they were 7-3.. with a 3 point loss at #18 Clemson and at Mizzou.

Losing to Wofford was terrible... but one bad loss doesn't make you 'bad'.

RIGHT after playing us they went 14-1.

I think we just played that good. I mean we did score 82 points. Both teams shot over 48% in that game. Jiri made 3-3 threes. We had 5 guys in double figures scoring. I would just say we played out of our arse to pull off a great upset.

Re: Floyd: Mac is a helluva coach

I'm definately not calling it a Princeton over UCLA upset...but it was an upset, and the original reason I posted it was because a previous post said we hadn't pulled off a single one...they were good enough to beat Louisville, play a solid Clemson team close, and nearly win at Missouri, when the Tigers were a completely different team...and we were playing dreadful basketball going into it.

Sounds good. I assume we're also counting the wins over Nebraska and Oklahoma State as upsets as well.

Re: Floyd: Mac is a helluva coach

It was probably an upset based on the spread, but it registered zero national pub because neither team was ranked and nobody could watch the game. To most people it was a 4 loss team beating a 3 loss team who was just coming off a win over Wofford. It looks good in hindsight but at the time it was just another game barely registering a blip on the CBB radar.

Great win though, very happy for the guys and it was our highest scoring game of the year.

Re: Floyd: Mac is a helluva coach

Pry not...we were favored over Nebraska and playing better than them at the time, and Okie State was about as inconsistant of a team as there was in college bball this year...I sense sarcasm, but when nobody expects a team to beat another team and they do, it's an upset. It doesn't have to be over a Kansas or a Texas. We were playing dreadful basketball going into that tourney, where as Purdue had one bad game, and had otherwise played some pretty solid ball.
